PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Following a 110-minute battle with the Empire 8 top-ranked Nazareth Golden Flyers, the St. John Fisher College men's soccer team earned a 1-1 draw on Wednesday night under the Growney Stadium lights. With the tie, the Cardinals moved to 3-6-3 in the 2021 campaign and 2-2-1 in conference play while their East Avenue rival stepped to 10-1-2 overall and 5-0-1 in the Empire 8.
The Cardinals found themselves at an early disadvantage, as the trio of Nazareth forwards stole a pass and buried it in the Fisher net in the game's fifth minute.
Fisher, unwilling to give in, buckled down and bested their opponent in nearly every statistical category for the remainder of the contest. The hosts produced 19 attempts at goal (nine more than Nazareth) and were awarded double the corner kicks (Cardinals' eight to Golden Flyers' four).
As the door started to close, the Cardinals aimed for the glimpse of light. In the match's 76th minute, Fisher was awarded a throw in which lined up with the toe of back linesman,
Cam Webb. The sophomore fired a pass through the open midfield, which bounced off the chest of Cardinals' leading scorer,
Riley Rease. With little room to work, the freshman made a lunging attempt at the ball, which slipped through the defense and past the keeper's left shoulder. The equalizer was Rease's eighth goal of the year and third in as many games, while Webb notched his first career points with the assist, and was enough for Fisher to hold on until the overtime period.
Despite two Nazareth corner kicks in the extra period's opening minutes, the Cardinals' defense of Webb,
Ryan Brown,
Tim Brown,
Trevor Heschke stood tall and allowed just one Golden Flyers' shot in the remaining time.
The Cardinals' 19 shots were headed by
Justin Bonetto, who took six over the course of the night, while
Ben Woolingham had three attempts. Rease,
Brennan Brown, and
Jackson Bishop each tallied a pair, while Webb,
Troy Jezorio,
Jeff Meyers, and
Brandon Andracki recorded a shot each.
Fisher's starting keeper,
Jadon Schlierf, logged all 110 minutes between the pipes, making five saves. His record in goal moved to 3-6-3 with the team's.
The Cardinals now look towards this Saturday's Senior Day, as they host Alfred University on October 23 at Growney Stadium for a 3 P.M. kickoff.
