Late Goals Prove Costly for Men's Soccer in Loss to Utica

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team fell victim to two late goals in a 2-3 loss to Utica College on Wednesday night at Growney Stadium. The Cardinals skid to 2-6-2 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8 while the Pioneers improved to 5-5-1 in 2021 and evened their conference record to 2-2.

Fisher took an advantage just 13 minutes into the contest, as Paraskeva Tegas broke free on the near side of the field and fed wide to Jackson Bishop, who sent a ball over the Utica goalie's right shoulder. The goal was the sophomore's second of the year and put the Cardinals up one score, until Utica equalized just before the game's intermission.

The Cardinals found an opportunity to bounce back in the 59th minute as Justin Bonetto crossed through the midfield to Ben Woolingham. The junior forward touched the ball as it arced up and over the keeper, and was chipped in by the home squad's leading scorer, Riley Rease. The freshman's sixth goal of the year, in just 10 games played, is tied for second most in the Empire 8.

Despite playing the next 19 minutes scoreless, Utica knotted the score up once more in the game's 78th minute before they scored the go-ahead tally just over five minutes later.

Fisher was awarded six corner kicks on the night, besting their opponent by one in that category, while they played from behind in the shot attempts. The Cardinals' 12 chances at goal were led by Bishop and Rease who notched three apiece, Bonetto and Woolingham who each tallied a pair, and Troy Jezorio and Jeff Meyers each getting off a single try.

Cardinals' keeper, Jadon Schlierf, logged 8 stops on 18 shots faced in the 90-minute affair, as his record fell to 2-6-2 with the team's.

Fisher has a few days' rest before they travel to Houghton College this Saturday, October 16 for a 3:30 P.M. Empire 8 kickoff with the Highlanders.
