TUCSON, AZ. – The St. John Fisher College softball team awarded their head coach,
Bari Mance, with her 200th career coaching victory on Friday at Abraham Lincoln Regional Park as the Cardinals downed Berry College (Ga.) and lost on an extra-innings walk off to No. 4 East Texas Baptist University. With the split, the Cardinals moved to 5-3 while Berry dropped to 6-2 and ETBU improved to 12-0.
FISHER 11, BERRY 7
The Cardinals got to work early by pairing offensive action and taking advantage of the Vikings' defensive mistakes. After
Emily Trotman reached on an error,
Abby Flakus singled to left field, which created havoc for the defense, as Trotman scored from second on a muffed throw.
Megan Kreger and
Allie Klonowski had back-to-back singles to score the Cardinals' second run of the day, then
Emma Smith singled as Kreger and Klonowski both scored from first base on an error by the Berry catcher to put the Cardinals up 4-0.
Berry stacked on the runs from there as they used two consecutive homers to fuel six runs over 3 innings while Fisher was kept scoreless.
The top of the Cardinals' order was proved impressive yet again as Trotman sliced a base knock before
Maria Marcera RBI tripled to right center field to trim the Vikings' lead to one. The freshman phenom, Klonowski, then RBI doubled down the left field line to score Marcera before Smith RBI singled and
Allison Rogowski reached on an error to score two more Fisher runs to take the lead, 9-7.
The bottom of the fifth saw more runs cross the plate for the Cardinals as Trotman blasted her second home run of the season and Flakus knocked her first homer of the year (second career) to take an 11-6 lead.
The Vikings got one run back in the top of the sixth, but the Cardinals' four run lead stood tall.
Jess Patterson relieved starting pitcher, Trotman, in the fourth inning and was awarded her second win of the year in the circle after allowing five hits (2-1). Trotman got the save as she came back into close out the contest for her first save of the year.
Smith led the Cardinals at the plate as she finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI. Trotman had two hits in three at bats with one RBI while Flakus went 2-for-4 with a single run batted in. Rounding out the hitting for the Cardinals were Marcera, Kreger, and Torlish who knocked one apiece.
NO. 4 ETBU 1, FISHER 0
Only one run was needed to decide the Cardinals' nightcap against No. 4 East Texas Baptist University. ETBU scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the eighth inning thanks to a base-hit which scored the international tiebreaker's runner that was placed on second base at the beginning of the inning.
The Cardinals' offense went hit-for-hit with the nationally-ranked and undefeated Tigers as Fisher put up seven hits in the game. Base hits came from Flakus (2), Trotman, Marcera, Klonowski, Smith and
Maddie Klidonas.
Fisher starting pitcher, Trotman, pitched lights out after allowing seven hits, striking out six batters, and walking just one Tiger after pitching 7.2 innings. Her pitching record moved to 3-2.
The Cardinals are back in action tomorrow under the lights against No. 14 University of St. Thomas at 6 P.M. MST (8 P.M. EST) and against Piedmont College at 8 P.M. MST (10 P.M. EST).
