Men's Volleyball Clipped in Five Sets

Chicopee, Massachusetts - The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team was beaten by Elms College in five sets (25-19, 23-25, 25-20, 17-25, 16-14) at the Blazers' Maguire Center Wednesday evening.

The Cardinals dropped to 13-4 this season while Elms moved to 10-8. This is the first time this season Fisher dropped back-to-back matches after losing to No. 1 Springfield on Tuesday.

Martin Hackford and Josh Bigford each had 16 kills with Martin Hackford hitting a new season-high with mark. The Orchard Park native also had 10 digs for his fourth double-double of the year while Bigford posted 13 digs for his second double-double of the season. Paul Hackford earned 51 assists with zero setting errors.

After the Blazers took the opening set, Fisher looked to square things up in the second. The Cardinals had the lead until Elms went up 17-16. Fisher was able to end the frame on a 5-2 run to win the set and make it 1-1.

Elms' strong play down the stretch in the third stanza proved to be the difference as it went up 2-1. The Cardinals responded by getting off to a 5-2 lead to start the fourth and never looked back. Bigford tallied three-straight kills to give Fisher set point. Paul Hackford set up Matt Broderick for point that sent the match to the fifth.

The Cardinals took control right out of the gate in the final set with gaining a 6-1 lead as Martin Hackford and Matt Beiter each put down an ace. However, the Blazers chipped away at the deficit and eventually tied it at nine-all. Fisher went up 14-11 with a chance to earn the victory, but Elms finished the match on a five-point streak to grab the win.

Ivan Lopez set a new career-high with 14 kills while also posting three total blocks. Paul Hackford and David Cerqua led the Cardinals with 17 digs each. Eric Bentivegna led all players in the match with six total blocks.

Fisher closes out its spring break trip on Saturday at No. 9 Endicott College for an 11 a.m. start time.
