Mocciaro Has a Career Day as No. 12 Women's Lacrosse Stymies No. 23 Cortland

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team defeated the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons in battle of two top-25 teams at Growney Stadium on Wednesday. The 12th ranked Cardinals won a defensive battle by a score of 9-5 over the 23rd ranked Red Dragons.

Junior Claudia Mocciaro was stellar in net as the Syracuse native made a career-high 12 saves. Empire 8 Player of Week Sydney DeGirolamo and Alyssa Sabotka each tallied two goals and one assist. Mallory Eymer also had a three-point day with one goal and two helpers.

Fisher was able to take control early with earning a 3-0 advantage through the first eight minutes. Cortland came back with its own three-goal run to tie things up. Eymer would find DeGirolamo for a score halfway through the first half to put the Cardinals back up 4-3.

The Red Dragons were able to tie the game once again with a free position goal. The Cardinals then finished out the half on a 3-0 run with scores by Eymer, Courtney O'Dea and Brittany Halpin to lead 7-4 heading into the break.

Sabotka was able to keep the momentum going in Fisher's favor by working her way in and beating the Cortland net minder to make it a four-goal game. The Red Dragons cut the score to an 8-5 game, however, Fisher was able to keep them off the scoreboard for the final 22 minutes. Mackenize Alexander netted the final tally on a man-up advantage.

Mocciaro denied four of six free position shot attempts. Erin Mills scooped up a game-high four ground balls and had a game-high three caused turnovers. DeGirolamo led all players with nine draw controls. Fisher went 85 percent on its clear attempts.

The Cardinals have a week to prepare as Oswego State comes to town next Wednesday for a 4 p.m. faceoff.
