UTICA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team won both of its matches at the SUNY Poly Wildcat Invitational on Saturday. The Cardinals, who are receiving votes in the latest NVA/AVCA Division III Men's Coaches Poll, won in straight-sets against John Jay College (25-12, 25-17, 25-15) and then pulled off a come-from-behind five-set victory over the Wentworth Institute of Technology (22-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-23, 15-12) to finish a perfect 4-0 at the tournament.
The Cardinals record moves to now 6-1 on the year. In the win versus John Jay,
Matt Broderick had a game-high nine kills while
Dylan Urbanski led all players with 23 assists.
David Cerqua produced the most digs for Fisher with eight. In the five-set thriller, Cerqua broke his own program record for digs in a single match with 33.
Josh Bigford tallied 18 kills while
Paul Hackford finished with 42 assists.
FISHER 3, JOHN JAY 0
After John Jay took an early lead, Fisher snatched it back at 4-3 on a service ace from
Matt Burney. The Cardinals would not trail for the rest of the set as a streak of six points won in a row pushed the advantage to 20-8 in favor of Fisher.
Avery Terroso served up an ace to end the opening frame.
The second stanza was a tight one until at 16-15 with the Cardinals ahead, Fisher finished off the set on a 9-2 run to take a commanding lead. The Cardinals smelled blood in the third set as they got out in front, 14-5, with the margin reaching as high as 12. Urbanski set up Broderick for the match point to start the day off in the win column.
Fisher hit well in both the first and third sets with a .407 and .316 hitting percentages respectively.
Graham Brodsky had eight kills and two block assists in only the second match of the freshman's career. Burney recorded a game-high three aces along with five kills on the match. Terroso registered five kills, six digs and two aces.
FISHER 3, WENTWORTH 2
The Cardinals played tough for the first two sets with falling by just a few points in both frames to a Wentworth team that was undefeated heading into the match.
Fisher turned it around in the third set with a convincing 25-14 win. Then a highly contested fourth set went the way of the Cardinals to force a winner-take-all fifth set. Fisher got the 15 points they needed in fifth to flip the script on Wentworth and take their sixth-straight victory.
Eric Bentivegna had a career-high seven total blocks.
Martin Hackford also set a new career-high with 13 digs to go along with 14 kills. Bigford was not only a force on the offensive end, but the defensive end as well with a career-high 21 digs.
As a team, the Cardinals broke their program record for digs in a match with 107.
Up next for the Cardinals is a trip to the Buffalo area to play a pair of games at Daemen College next weekend. Fisher faces Wittenberg University on Friday at 5 p.m. and then takes on the host Wildcats on Saturday at 12 p.m.
