Women's Basketball Nails Down Fifth Straight Win After Routing Elmira

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – 12 different players scored on Friday night as the St. John Fisher College women's basketball team set a new season-high in a 94-49 rout of Elmira College inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.  With the win, Fisher, which is in first place in the conference standings and has now won its last five games, improved to 12-4 overall and 5-0 in the Empire 8 while the Soaring Eagles fell to 4-13, 2-4, respectively.

After swapping baskets over the first two minutes of play, the Cardinals went on a tear.  Trailing by a point, Fisher would catch fire as the Cardinals drained 10 of their next 16 shots including five from distance as part of a 26-4 run to close out the first quarter.  The team's 30 points marked a season-high and was fueled by 20 combined points from Miranda Lynch, Harper Mead and Julia Mertsock.

As the second quarter got underway, Fisher's offensive production continued with Alyssa Ballou finding Anna Milham on the corner for three points to spark a 10-2 run that staked the home team to a 33-9 lead.  A 3-pointer from Elmira on its ensuing possession did little to slow the Cardinals' pace as head coach Melissa Kuberka's squad rattled off 15 of the game's next 17 points including five from Ella Eckert to push the lead to 39 with 2:48 still remaining in the first half.

The half was one for the ages as Fisher shot 21-of-37 (.568) from the floor and knocked down eight from behind the arc.  The Cardinals dominated Elmira on the glass and out-rebounded their guest 24-8, with 12 coming on the offensive end of the court.
The Cardinals continued to fire on all cylinders in the second half as the lead grew to as many as 49 before the final horn sounded.

Eckert led all scorers with 22 points on 9-of-12 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and two assists while Lynch poured in 13 points with three makes from distance.  Mertsock finished with 11 points and four boards while Milham added 11 points in nine minutes.  Mallory Wood contributed seven points in the win while Mead finished with six points, six assists and four rebounds in all.

As a team, Fisher held Elmira to 20 field goals and forced the Soaring Eagles in to 22 turnovers.  Fisher came away with 12 steals and had 25 assists on 37 made field goals.

The Cardinals will look to pad their lead in the conference standings at 4 p.m. on Saturday when they host Hartwick College in another Empire 8 clash inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.
