HOUGHTON, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team remained perfect in Empire 8 play on Saturday as the Cardinals ran away with a 93-56 decision inside The Nielson Center at Houghton College. With the win, Fisher improved to 7-6 on the season and 2-0 in conference play while the host Highlanders fell to 2-11, 0-2, respectively.
Six players finished in double figures led by
Brendan Trapper who poured in 15 points to go along with five rebounds and a steal.
James Leone and
Sammy Robinson finished with 11 points apiece with Leone pulling down six rebounds and coming up with three steals.
Dylan Harrington, who scored a career-high 20 points on Friday night, chipped in with 11 points and three assists off the bench while
Dennis Hare and
Matt Asenjo each contributed 10 pints in the win.
Sean Williams stuffed the stat sheet with five points, five rebounds, four dimes and two steals.
As a team, Fisher was 34-for-75 (.453) from the floor and knocked down 11 3-pointers in all. The Cardinals committed a season-low 10 turnovers and came away with 15 steals on the defensive end of the court.
The Cardinals would eventually shake off a sluggish start as the two teams remained deadlocked at 18 after 13 minutes of play. With the score tied and time ticking down in the opening half, Trapper connected from deep to spark a 22-3 run over the final seven minutes of the period to stake the visitors to a 19-point lead at the break, 40-21.
As the second half got underway, the Cardinals were able to carry their momentum over as head coach
Mike Grosodonia II's squad built a 35-point margin after making five shots from downtown in a span of six possessions as part of a 17-6 run that made it 76-41.
The Highlanders would cut the gap to 28, but that was as close as they'd come as Fisher built its advantage back up to 37 points before the final horn sounded.
Fisher's season continues at 5:30 p.m. on Friday when it travels to Utica College for an Empire 8 clash.
