ITHACA, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team defeated Ithaca College, 1-0, at the Bombers' Higgins Stadium Wednesday night. The Cardinals, who are receiving the 24
th most votes in the recent NFHCA Coaches Division III rankings, move to 5-1 this season while Ithaca falls to 5-4.
Senior
Lindsay Scott scored the lone tally of night while senior
Kelly Bergamo made four saves in net for her first career shut out.
Fisher got its offense going early with the first two shots of the game. Three was the magic number for the Cardinals as their third shot of game was Scott sending the ball into the back of the cage. The Webster native now ranks second on the team with four goals this year.
The Cardinals' defense was stellar for the opening half not allowing a single shot on net for the first 30 minutes. Ithaca finally broke through the Fisher stout defenders in the third quarter but that is where Bergamo shined. The Liverpool native made all four of her saves of the night in the third frame including ones on back-to-back corners with just over five minutes left in the quarter.
Heading into the fourth and final quarter, Fisher held onto a one goal edge. The Cardinals offense broke down the Bombers as they kept the pressure on the entire quarter by holding possession in the Ithaca zone for much of the frame. The Bombers were unable to get a shot off in the fourth as Fisher let the clock run to triple zeros to head back home with the victory.
This was the Cardinals' fifth-straight shutout win against Ithaca. Bergamo is on a 96-minute shutout streak that started Sunday with keeping Nationally Ranked Williams off the board for the entire second half.
After two-straight road contests, Fisher heads back to Growney Stadium for its first conference matchup on Saturday at 4 p.m. versus Utica.
