PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team was unable to overcome an early scoring output by the University of Rochester, as the Cardinals dropped their home opener at Growney Stadium, 2-5. The Cardinals moved to 2-4 on the season while the Yellowjackets improved to 4-1.
The cross-town rival snuck its first goal through the posts just 1:20 into the contest before the Yellowjackets scored on a breakaway eight minutes later.
In the next 30 minutes, head coach
Molly Romano's defense held Rochester to just two shots before its third struck the back of the Fisher net at the 39-minute mark.
Following the intermission and a fourth Yellowjackets goal, Fisher found a bit of breathing room as a deflected shot ricocheted off the head of
Logan Chase and between the posts in the contest's 52
nd minute. The goal marked the junior's first of the season and the second of her collegiate career.
The Yellowjackets added a fifth and final goal to the board, but that didn't stop the Cardinals as they tacked on their final score of the match in the 80
th minute as
Abigail Barr beat the out-of-position Yellowjackets' keeper for a 25-yard boot that rung the back of the net. Barr's first goal of the season also marked the second time in the senior's career that her name appeared in the scoring column.
Fisher totaled twelve shots in the contest, led by
Carli Kovarik who tallied five of her own.
Megan Letta added three shots, followed by Chase, Barr,
Abigail Dwyer and
Jessica Aldred who contributed one shot apiece.
Cardinals' keeper
Lila Platt was kept on her toes throughout the evening as the junior faced faced twelve shots in the match and got a hand on two of them. Platt's record drops to 1-2 on the season.
Fisher plays under the lights again at 7 p.m. this Tuesday, September 17 when the SUNY Cortland Red Dragons come to town for the Cardinals' last game before conference action begins.
