PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Ashley Prince drove in all three runs and
Emily Trotman won her 21st game of the season as the Cardinals advanced to the Empire 8 Championship game behind a 3-2 win over top-seeded Stevens Institute of Technology at Weehawken Waterfront Park. With the victory, the Cardinals improved to 25-14 on the season.
After two scoreless innings to open the game, Fisher got on the board in the top of the third as Trotman led off with an infield single before moving around the horn on two straight sacrifice bunts. With a runner at third and two down, Prince came to bat and cracked a run-scoring single to left to put the Cardinals ahead, 1-0.
The game remained a one-run affair until the top of the fifth when
Maddy Pepke drew a one-out walk before Prince crushed a two-run home run to make it a three-run contest heading to the home half of the fifth.
The Ducks were able to pull to within two runs in the next half inning after back-to-back two-out singles kept the inning alive. With a runner at third, Stevens attempted a double steal as the runner from third crossed home plate before the final out was made to make it 3-1.
In the bottom of the seventh with just three outs left in play, Stevens led off with a single to left and advanced the runner with a sac bunt. After moving up a bag on a wild pitch, Stevens would drive in a run with a ground out, but Trotman got the final hitter to line out to center to preserve the win.
Trotman, who moved to 21-8 with the win and pitched a no-hitter on Friday, pitched seven innings where she allowed two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts.
The Cardinals finished with six hits on the day led by Prince who was 2-for-4 with three RBI and a homer in the win.
Sammie Torlish had two hits in four at-bats while
Jessica Sardina and Trotman rounded out the hitting.
Fisher will play for its third straight Empire 8 Championship beginning at 11 a.m. on Sunday at Weehawken Waterfront Park. Fisher will need to win one game overall while its opponent would need to take two wins to claim the conference crown.
