MEDFORD, Mass. – The No. 10 St. John Fisher College women's lacrosse team fell to No. 6 York College of Pennsylvania by a score of 14-11 in the Third Round of NCAA Division III Championship on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals finish their remarkable 2019 season with a 19-2 overall record, the most wins in a single season in program history. York improves to 17-5 overall and moves on to face off with Tufts University in the Quarterfinal Round on Sunday.
Sydney DeGirolamo re-wrote the program's record book in the third quarter as the freshman captured her second draw control of the game, putting her atop the Fisher lost for most draw controls in a single season.
York was the first team on the scoreboard in the Third Round as the Spartans opened the scoring after only 70 seconds ticked off the clock.
Fisher tallied its first goal of the game at the 24:55 mark as
Mary Grace Doyle scored her 51st of the season to tie the game up at one goal apiece.
From there, York would pull ahead with some early momentum as the Spartans scored the game's next three goals over the course of the next five minutes of game time.
Mallory Eymer would then find the back of the net for her first of the game at the 17:27 mark, which was then followed quickly by an answering York tally. However,
Brittany Halpin came right back with an answering goal, pulling the Cardinals back to within two goals.
As the first half of action continued, York would add four more goals to its total, while DeGirolamo scored on the man-up advantage to cut the Spartans lead to 9-4 before the halftime break.
It didn't take Fisher long to cut the York lead to four once the second half began as
Emily Thompson finished off a feed from Eymer at the 26:44 mark.
Following back-to-back Spartan tallies that pushed their lead back to six goals, the momentum swung to the Fisher sideline over the next seven minutes of game time. The Cardinals answered with three-straight goals as Eymer, Thompson, and
Allison Rupp helped bring Fisher back to within three goals midway through the second half.
From there, both sides would trade goals as DeGirolamo notched her second of the game to keep the Cardinals within three goals with just over seven minutes remaining.
As the second half neared its conclusion, both sides would add two more goals to its totals as Doyle and DeGirolamo finished the Cardinal goal scoring, both on the man-up advantage.
As a team, Fisher caused 16 total York turnovers throughout the game, while also completing 14 of its 15 clear attempts successfully.
Molly Tice led the way defensively for the Cardinals as the senior posted three caused turnovers, while also adding four ground balls. Goalkeepers
Morgan Hayes and
Claudia Mocciaro both finished the Third Round matchup with one save apiece.
