Simmons Comes Through With Walk-Off Double to Cap Baseball's Sweep of Moravian

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Ryan Simmons hit a walk-off double on Sunday and the St. John Fisher College baseball team pushed its winning streak to five games after dropping Moravian College in a non-conference doubleheader at Dugan Yard.  With the wins, Fisher improved to 16-7 while the Greyhounds slipped to 14-11 overall.

FISHER 11, MORAVIAN 1

The Cardinals found their groove early after sending 10 players to the plate in the bottom of the first inning.  Justin Graham got things started with a single through the right side before Jack Kelleher drew a four-pitch walk.  With two on and no outs, Thomas Pasquale stayed hot with an RBI-single through the left side to make it 1-0.  From there, Moravian would notch a strikeout, but was unable to string together back-to-back outs as Antony Mantova singled to load the bases.

With runners occupying every base and nowhere to put anyone, Simmons took advantage as the junior crushed a double to deep center field that cleared the bases and made it 5-0.  As the inning continued, Stephen Edgett swapped place with him with a run-scoring double of his own before Moravian could get off the field.

The hot hitting carried over into the bottom of the second inning as the home team plated two more runs on three hits including RBI-singles from Murphy and Mantova to make it 8-0 heading to the top of the third.
Leading by eight runs, Kelleher plated another run in the bottom of the third after driving in Edgett who blasted his second double of the game.

In the bottom of the fourth, Fisher tacked on another run as Ryan Brown was credited with an RBI.  Down by 10 runs, Moravian finally got on the board in the top of the fifth with one run, but gave it right back in the home half of the inning as Kelleher blasted his third home run of the weekend to cap off an 11-1 win.

Kenneth Westbrook remained unbeaten on the year as the freshman improved to 5-0 behind a five-inning performance that saw him yield one run on six hits with four strikeouts.  Jim Dawson pitched the final two innings and finished with a pair of strikeouts on the day.

FISHER 4, MORAVIAN 3

The Greyhounds struck first in the finale as Moravian plated three runs in the top of the third and held the high-powered Cardinals' offense scoreless through four.

Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the fifth, Fisher got on the board with a pair runs including an RBI-double from Kelleher and a one-out single from Murphy to make it 3-2.

Still needing one run to knot things up, the Cardinals did just that in the bottom of the seventh after a leadoff double by Pasquale came around to score when Simmons smacked a run-scoring single up the middle to level the game at three runs apiece.

With the game still even in the ninth, Moravian led off with a double and quickly moved the runner to third with a sacrifice bunt.  With the go-ahead run just 90 feet away, the Greyhounds tried to lay down a bunt, but Fisher was ready as Michael Beimel tagged the runner out to clear the bases.

In the bottom of the ninth, Mantova singled and stole second base before Simmons took a 3-2 offering and belted it into the gap in right center to lift Fisher to the win.

In all, the Cardinals used five pitchers starting with Murphy who lasted three innings in all.  Jared Wren pitched the fourth inning and fanned two in a scoreless frame while Brandon Roberts went two innings and finished with four strikeouts.  Tim Geissel tossed 2.1 scoreless innings before giving way to Kyle Chambers who moved to 1-0 on the year after holding Moravian at bay for two-thirds of an inning.  Overall, the Cardinals' bullpen scattered just three hits over six innings and notched eight Ks in all.

Fisher will look to continue its winning ways at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when it travels across town to take on Rochester Institute of Technology in a non-conference nine-inning game.
