PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team exploded for 15 runs on Wednesday as the Cardinals cruised past The College at Brockport, 15-4, in a non-conference, nine-inning game at Dugan Yard. With the win, Fisher improved to 12-7 overall while the Golden Eagles fell to 8-13 on the season.
In all, Fisher used seven pitchers on the day with
Kenneth Westbrook taking the ball to start. The freshman was credited with the win to move to 4-0 after allowing just one hit over three innings of work. Westbrook fanned five in the win before being lifted in favor of
Dillan Wilkinson who struck out the side in a scoreless fourth inning.
Brandon Roberts pitched one inning while
Jared Wren was tagged for three runs on two hits before being relieved by
Jack Delaney who threw a perfect frame.
Tim Geissel worked through the seventh and eighth innings and gave up an unearned run on two hits while
Kyle Chambers pitched a perfect ninth inning with two strikeouts.
The Cardinals clubbed 17 hits in the win led by
Michael Beimel who went 3-for-4 at the plate with a walk, two runs scored and a career-high five RBI.
Ryan Simmons had three hits in four at-bats to go along with an RBI and four runs scored while
Ryan Brown went 3-for-5 with two RBI and a pair of runs.
Justin Graham had three hits on the day including a triple while
Stephen Edgett and
Antony Mantova each had a pair of hits to their credit.
Fisher jumped all over the Golden Eagles starting pitcher to the tune of four runs of four hits in the bottom of the first inning. After Graham led off with an infield single,
Sean Harris would reach on a fielding error to put two on with no outs.
Thomas Pasquale stepped in and ripped an RBI-single to right that plated Graham and made it 1-0. With Harris on third base, Mantova drove in a run with a groundout before Simmons followed with a single up the middle to make it a three-run affair. From there, Beimel kept the momentum going with a single to center that scored Simmons before the Golden Eagles could retire the side.
The lead remained at four runs until the bottom of the third when Fisher put together a two-out rally as Mantova and Simmons connected on back-to-back singles before Beimel crushed a two-run single to right that made it 6-0 heading into the fourth.
Brockport took advantage of a pitching change in the sixth inning with three runs coming in one swing of the bat, but Delaney entered the game and shut down the Golden Eagles to keep the lead intact, 6-3.
Fisher blew the game wide open in the bottom of the seventh with five runs on four hits to open up an 11-3 advantage. The Cardinals quickly loaded the bases following a pair of walks and a hit-by-pitch. From there, Beimel singled up the middle to plate a pair while Brown and Edgett followed suit with RBI knocks of their own.
Brockport got one back in the top of the eighth, but the Cardinals continued to mash as Fisher plated four more runs on four hits in the home half of the inning before Chambers finished the game off in the ninth.
Fisher will look to keep its hot hitting going at 4 p.m. on Friday when the team travels to Oswego to do battle with the Lakers in a matchup of two of the New York Region's top teams.
