Men's Lacrosse Tripped Up By No. 11 Stevens In Conference Action

HOBOKEN, N.J. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team fell in conference action to No. 11 Stevens on the road Saturday afternoon in a tightly contested matchup by a score of 11-9. With the loss Fisher falls to 12-2 overall on the season and 5-1 in the Empire 8, while the Ducks improve to 14-2 overall and 7-0 in conference action.

The loss marks only the second defeat of the season for the Cardinals as Dave Dobbins's team had won six-straight matchups dating back to March 20th.

Joe Post highlighted the matchup as the sophomore captured his 153rd ground ball to break his own single-season record for most ground balls in a single season. The Canandaigua native finished 17-for-23 inside the face-off circle, while also notching a game-high 11 ground balls.

Aside from Post's record breaking performance, Nicholas Miller scored his 100th career goal as the sophomore scored his second of the game at the 11:42 mark of the second quarter to bring his season total to 60.

Fisher got the game's goal scoring started in the battle of the top-two teams in the Empire 8 as Ian Evans and Tommy Farry gave the Cardinals an early 2-0 lead.

As the first period continued, Miller would answer Steven's first goal of the game at the 2:51 mark, however the Ducks surged ahead to score three more goals in the closing 54 seconds of the opening period, earning a 4-3 advantage.

Miller opened up the second period scoring as the Ithaca native took a feed from Danny Turck to tie the game back up at four apiece.

From there, Stevens answered back with two goals of its own to once again take back a 6-4 as the halftime horn sounded.

For the third time, Fisher opened up the period's goals scoring as Jack Mulvihill and Farry brought the Cardinals right back into the game with two quick tallies.

Over the course of the next four minutes of game time, the Ducks gained some momentum and would score the game's next four goals, pushing their lead to 10-6 late in the third period. However on the man-up advantage, senior Chance Gates scored his 21st of the season to pull Fisher to within three as the fourth quarter approached.

Fisher once again opened the scoring in the final quarter of play, this time it was Tucker O'Donnell and Mulvihill finding the back of the net, pulling the Cardinals back to within one goal early on the fourth.

Despite a ton of quality chances and 14 shots over the final 11 minutes of action, the Cardinals were unable to find the back of the net as Stevens hung on for the win, with the help of its insurance marker at the 3:25 mark.

As a team, the Cardinals finished 17-for-21 on their clear attempts, while also out-shooting the Ducks throughout the game 46-39. Gates, Mulvihill, Austin Jobson, and Cole Fowler all finished with one caused turnover in the matchup.

Darin Eakins kept Fisher alive with a big saves down the stretch as the junior moves his record 10-2 overall on the season after making 13 total saves in net.

The Cardinals return to action at 4 p.m. on Wednesday when they welcome Alfred University to Growney Stadium for their final regular season home matchup of the 2019 season.
