BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team came up short on Tuesday, 13-6, as the Cardinals traveled to Brockport to face the Golden Eagles in a non-conference, nine-inning affair at Clark V. Whited Field. With the defeat, Fisher slipped to 18-10 on the season while The College at Brockport improved to 13-16 overall.
In the top of the first inning,
Justin Graham worked a four pitch walk and promptly stole second base to put a man in scoring position. After moving to third base on a ground out, Graham would come around to score the game's first run when
Thomas Pasquale beat out an infield single to make it 1-0.
The Cardinals doubled their lead in the top of the top of the third when
Antony Mantova plated Pasquale who had led off the inning with a double to right.
Holding a 2-0 lead heading to the home half of the third, Fisher made a pitching change as the Golden Eagles pulled even with two runs on three hits and an error to head to the top of the fourth knotted up at 2-2.
After holding Fisher at bay in the top of the fourth, Brockport took advantage of another pitching change with two more runs on one hit and another error to open up a two-run edge, 4-2.
Trailing by a pair, Fisher countered in the top of the fifth with three runs to reclaim a slim lead, 5-4. Following a groundout to the left side of the infield,
Allen Murphy stepped in and jacked a solo shot over the left field fence for his conference-leading eighth homer of the season. Mantova came up next and lined a double before
Ryan Simmons followed suit with a double of his own to plate the tying run. Following a pitching change for Brockport,
Michael Beimel greeted the new arm with an RBI-single down the right field to score the go-ahead run before Brockport could retire the side.
The lead remained in Fisher's favor until the bottom of the sixth when Brockport plated a pair and took advantage of another Fisher error to take a 6-5 edge into the top of the seventh.
Facing a one-run gap, Fisher came out swinging as Simmons mashed a leadoff double. The Golden Eagles were poised to escape the jam with two quick outs, but
Stephen Edgett connected for a two-base hit that scored Simmons and tied the game up at six runs apiece.
The tide shifted again in the bottom of the seventh after the home team cracked four hits and scored three runs to make it 9-6 in the late innings.
Brockport struck again in the eighth with four runs after sending a grand slam over the fence to earn the 13-6 win.
Tim Geissel started on the bump for Fisher and pitched two scoreless innings before being relieved by
Jim Dawson who gave up two runs on three hits over one inning of work.
Jack Delaney yielded two unearned runs over two-thirds of a frame while
Spencer Weyand notched four outs before being swapped out for
Dillan Wilkinson (1-2) who was hit with the loss. Wilkinson allowed four runs (two earned) over 1.1 innings to go along with two strikeouts.
Kyle Chambers worked two outs and was tagged for a run while
Matt Toohey was saddled with four runs in one inning overall.
At the dish, Murphy was 3-for-5 with a home run while Simmons had two doubles on the day. Pasquale was 2-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Fisher will have a quick turnaround as it travels to Houghton at 5 p.m. on Wednesday for an Empire 8 tilt.
