PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team won a pair of matches on Saturday afternoon as the Cardinals defeated Vassar College and Daemen Colleges on Bobby Wanzer Court. With the two victories Fisher improves to 20-9 overall and 7-2 in the UVC, while Vassar falls to 12-11 overall and the Wildcats move to 6-13

Mike Strumpfler for their outstanding careers.
The Cardinals outlasted the Brewers in four sets to open up play, winning 25-21, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22. The Fisher offense was hot out of the gate in the match as the Cardinals tallied 15 kills in the first set with a .323 hitting percentage.
Both sides would trade points back-and-forth for the majority of the first set, trying to gain the early momentum. However, it was Fisher coming out on top in the end as a block from Strumpfler and
Matt Broderick capped off a three-point run to win the opening set.
In the second set, the Cardinals used the momentum and were able to jump out to an 18-12 lead with the help of a five-point serving run from
Brandon Cox-Bagley.
From there, it was Vassar able to use two separate four-point scoring runs of its own to finish of second set and tie the match up at one set apiece.
After dropping the second set, Fisher moved forward and used a six-point
Josh Bigford serving run to take a 17-8 lead midway through the third set. As the set continued, the Brewers were able to fight back and tie the game up at 23-23, however it was Bigford with back-to-back kills sealing the two-point win.
Much like the previous three sets, both sides jockeyed for momentum until eventually the fourth set was knotted up at 17 apiece.
From there, Fisher rattled off three-straight points as Ivan lopez came up with one of his eight total blocks in the match to give the Cardinals a 20-17 advantage.
The Cardinals continued to battle until a kills from
Paul Hackford and
Andres Ramirez capped off the hard-earned four set victory.
Bigford would lead the way with 14 kills and 12 digs, while Broderick and Ramirez added 12 and 10 kills respectively.
Paul Hackford finished the match with a game-high 42 assists and
David Cerqua pitched in nine digs.
Fisher would then close out the day with straight set win over Daemen 26-24, 25-21, 25-16. As a team, the Cardinals finished their second match with 35 kills, 11 service aces, and 11 total blocks.
The first set opened up with both sides trading points, eventually leading to a 22-22 tie on the scoreboard. Following a kill from Bigford, Fisher would score three of the game's next five points to win the opening set.
Martin Hackford began the second set with a three-point service run that included his second service ace. As the set continued, the Cardinals maintained a lead and would go up 21-16 late in the set off of a solo lock by Cahill.
Cahill along with Strumpfler would go on to total four kills over the next eight points, earning Fisher the two sets to none advantage.
In the third set it was all Fisher from the opening whistle as the Cardinals notched their 20
th win of the season with the help from three, four-point scoring runs throughout the final set. Strumpfler finished off the match and his senior day with a monster kill following a beautiful one-handed set from fellow senior Magiera.
Bigford and
Martin Hackford led the way versus the Wildcats finishing with nine kills apiece, while Strumpfler added eight kills and three service aces. Magiera handled the setting duties and finished with a game-high 30 assists.
Fisher returns to action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. when it travels to Wells College to take on the Express in a non-conference matchup.
