PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College softball team returned to action for the first time in nearly two weeks on Thursday as the Cardinals split with Keuka College in what marked Fisher's home opener. With the split, the Cardinals moved to 5-6 on the season while the Wolves finished the day at 1-5.
FISHER 3, KEUKA 2
Emily Trotman pitched a gem in the opener after the sophomore scattered just five hits and allowed two runs (one earned) over seven innings. Trotman, who moved to 3-3 on the season with the win, struck out five overall.
The Cardinals got on the board in the bottom of the second inning after
Sammie Torlish, who singled earlier in the inning, came around to score on an error by Keuka following a single to center by
Jessica Sardina.
Holding a one-run lead, Fisher added to its advantage in the third when
Sarah Kubik crushed a two-run shot well over the left field fence that plated
Julia Sortisio who had reached on a single.
Ahead by three runs, Fisher gave two back in the top of the fourth as the Wolves lifted a two-run shot of their own over the center field fence, but that was as close as they would come as Trotman allowed just one base runner over the final three innings to secure the win.
The Cardinals had six hits in the win with
Ashley Prince going 2-for-3. Kubik, Torlish, Sortisio and Sardina each finished the game with one hit apiece. Fisher also flashed its speed on the bases with Prince swiping two bags and Sortisio owning one steal.
KEUKA 7, FISHER 2
In the nightcap, Fisher took advantage of four early errors by Keuka with one run in each of the first two innings, but the Cardinals were unable to hold the lead as the Wolves evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the fourth courtesy of a two-run double.
With the score knotted up in the fifth, Keuka struck again as the visitors pushed five runs across the dish with five hits to claim a 7-2 edge.
Allison Rogowski was tagged with the loss to move to 2-2 on the season. The freshman pitcher threw 4.2 innings and yielded seven runs (five earned) on nine hits. Trotman pitched the final seven outs and allowed just one walk.
Marissa Kirker started at third in the second game and went 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and stolen base.
Emily Willis-Nersinger was 1-for-3 while
Rachel Evans had one hit in two at-bats to go along with a walk.
The Cardinals are scheduled to return to action at 1 p.m. on Sunday when they host Penn State Behrend in a non-conference doubleheader at The Softball Complex.
