Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Koonmen's Career Night Not Enough as Women's Basketball Has Winning Streak Snapped at Nazareth

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team had its four-game winning streak stopped on Friday night as the Cardinals fell to Nazareth College, 69-59, inside Kidera Gymnasium in the second edition of this season's Battle of the Beaks.  With the loss, Fisher fell to 14-7 on the season and 8-4 in the Empire 8 while the Golden Flyers improved to 14-7, 9-3, respectively.

Freshman Leah Koonmen finished with a career-high 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting to go along with seven rebounds and two assists while senior Erin Hulbert added 12 points, six boards and a team-leading four dimes.  Ella Eckert chipped in with her second straight double-double on 10 points and 10 rebounds while Miranda Lynch netted six points off the bench.

The Cardinals were clicking on both ends of the court to begin the game as the visitors held Nazareth to just two made field goals over the first 10 minutes of play to take a 19-5 lead into the second period.

The roles would be revered as the second stanza got underway with Nazareth stringing together a 19-2 run of its own to take a 24-21 edge.  Trailing by three points, Fisher found its groove and would close out the frame on an 8-1 run to take a 29-25 edge into intermission.

Trailing by four to begin the second half, the Golden Flyers would get on the board just 16 seconds in, but Fisher countered with seven unanswered points including five from Koonmen to open up a nine-point cushion, 36-27.

As the period wore on, Nazareth dialed it in from distance and connected on back-to-back 3-pointers to erase Fisher's advantage and make it a one-point game, 36-35.  From there, both teams struggled to get into a rhythm as the score remained deadlocked at 40-40 with one quarter left to go.

In the fourth quarter, Fisher continued to push the tempo, but was unable to keep pace as the Golden Flyers used an 8-2 run to take control, 48-42.  After Eckert made it a two-possession game with a bucket inside the paint, Nazareth drained three from distance over the next three minutes to hold a double-digit lead, 60-45.

As the period continued, Fisher resorted to fouling to conserve time, but the damage had been done as the Golden Flyers improved their standing in the Empire 8.

As a team, Fisher owned a significant advantage on the glass and out-rebounded its opponent, 51-26.  The difference, however, came behind the arc as Nazareth knocked down 12 3-pointers in the win.

Fisher will look to get things back on track at 12 p.m. on Sunday when it travels to Oneonta to take on first place Hartwick College.
