PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher men's volleyball team won its sixth straight match on Tuesday night inside Manning & Napier Varsity Gymnasium, as the Cardinals took down Wells College in straight sets 25-15, 25-23, 25-19. With the win, Fisher improves its record to 7-3 overall on the year, while the Express fall to 7-3 in 2019.
Fisher as a team totaled a whopping 14 total blocks in the three-set victory, with
Ivan Lopez finishing with 10 blocks which breaks the program's record for most blocks in a single match.
Paul Hackford also pitched in two block solos and six blocking assists to go along with a game-high 33 assists.
The Cardinal offense came to play in the first set, totaling 12 kills and a .556 hitting percentage on only 18 attempts. Fisher jumped out of the gate with a quick 5-0 run led by
Matt Broderick at the service line.
From there it was all Fisher throughout the entirety of the first set, as the Cardinals put together a number of scoring runs including a final three-point scoring run that was finished off by kills from Broderick and
Andres Ramirez.
Already up one set to none, Fisher again jumped out to an early four point lead with the help of kills from Broderick and
Josh Bigford. After falling behind 17-13 midway through the second set, Wells was able to put together a scoring run of its own, eventually scoring the next six points to take a late 19-17 advantage.
However, Fisher was able to battle its way back and score four of the final five points in route to a second set victory and a two sets to none lead over the Express.
Both sides traded a pair of scoring runs to start off the third set, eventually leading to an 11-10 lead for Wells on the scoreboard. But from there, it was all Fisher for the remainder of the match as the Cardinals finished off Wells with a 15-7 scoring run that included a six-point run from Ramirez at the service line.
Bigord, the reigning United Volleyball Conference Rookie of the Week led Fisher with another game-high 16 kills and a .400 hitting percentage. Ramirez, Broderick, and Lopez all finished with six kills apiece, while
David Cerqua led the way defensively with nine digs.
Fisher returns to action on Saturday at 1 p.m. when it travels to Erie, Pennsylvania to take on Adrian College, followed by Penn State Behrend at 3 p.m.
