WOOSTER, Ohio – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team got its 2019 season started on the road on Saturday afternoon with a 20-3 triumph of Wooster College. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 1-0 overall on the year, while the Scots fall to 0-1 overall.
The Cardinals were able to hold control of the game throughout with the help of 36 shots on goal as well as a 20-6 advantage inside the face-off circle.
The Fisher offense got its regular season started early on in the first quarter as the Cardinals scored the first two goals of the game at the 11:04 and 9:51 marks of the first quarter.
Ian Evans and
Tucker O'Donnell were able to find the back of the net, while
Matt Jeffries and
Jack Hyde picked up the assists.
As the first quarter of action wore on, Fisher and Wooster traded a pair of goals back-and-forth leading to a 5-2 advantage in favor of the Cardinals at the end of the first quarter. Evans and O'Donnell found the back of the net once again for their second goals of the game, while sophomore
Nicholas Miller tallied his first with only 45 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Wooster cut the Fisher lead to 6-3 early on in the second quarter as the Scots found the back of the net only 45 seconds into the quarter.
However from there, it was all Fisher for the remainder of the game as the Cardinals went on to score the game's next 14 goals, while holding Wooster to only 17 shots on goal in all.
The Cardinals tallied four goals in the second quarter, bringing a 9-3 lead into the halftime break. Goal scorers included Miller, Evans
Jack Mulvihill, and
Danny Turck.
Fisher jumped out on a hot start in the third quarter, scoring six goals within the first seven minutes of the second half. Six different Cardinals found the back of the net in the third quarter including Evans, Miller, Turck,
Chance Gates,
Zach Wagner, and
Jack Hyde.
To close out the game, the Cardinals tallied another four goals in the final quarter as Miller,
Jordan Depetres, and
Jacob Risavi closed out the scoring for Fisher.
In all, the freshman Evans led all scorers with five goals and two assists in his first game in a Cardinal uniform, while Miller added four goals and three assists.
Joe Post picked up right where he left off last season as the sophomore finished 19-for-24 in the face-off circle and grabbed a game-high 17 ground balls.
Darin Eakins was credited with the victory in net for Fisher, with the freshman finishing with nine saves in 45 minutes of game-time. The Fisher defense was stellar throughout, causing 17 turnovers as well as holding Wooster to only eight shots on goal in the second half.
The Cardinals return to action on Friday at 1:30 p.m. as they host SUNY Potsdam at Pinnacle Athletic Campus for their second non-conference matchup of the season.
