HOUGHTON, N.Y. – On the final day of the regular season in what will mark the final regular season game of his career, senior
Ryan Henderson became the 24th player in program history to eclipse 1,000 career points as the Cazenovia native finished with 18 points in a 95-65 win over Houghton College on Tuesday night inside the Nielson Center. With the win, Fisher will head into the postseason with a 17-8 overall record and a 12-4 record in Empire 8 play while the Highlanders conclude their season with a 1-24 overall mark and a 0-16 record in conference play.
Henderson, who reached the plateau at the free throw line with 18:10 showing on the clock in the second half, becomes the second player in as many years to record his 1,000th career point at Houghton after
Tyler English reached the milestone against the Highlanders last season.
In all, Henderson was 8-for-10 from the floor and hauled in eight rebounds to go along with two assists.
Sammy Robinson led all scorers with 25 points as the junior, who leads the Empire 8 in scoring this season, also contributed nine rebounds, three steals and two dimes in the win. Freshman big man
Brendan Trapper netted a career-high 15 points off the bench while
Mark Valeriani added eight points including two makes from behind the arc.
James Leone posted seven points and
Louden Porter went 2-for-3 from distance to finish with six points in all.
After swapping baskets over the first few minutes of play, Fisher began to take charge as the Cardinals used a 9-3 run to create some separation with the score at 20-13. As the first half continued to wear down, Robinson took over on the offensive end of the floor and produced nine straight points as part of a larger 14-5 burst to stake the visitors to a 16-point cushion, 39-23. Houghton was able to slow the Cardinals' momentum on its final possession with a 3-pointer on the wing to make it a 13-point affair at halftime.
In the second frame, Houghton would pull to within eight points with four minutes gone by, but was unable to keep pace as the Cardinals scored 15 of the game's next 17 points to open up a 21-point edge, 61-40.
From there, the Cardinals would score 12 unanswered points and saw their lead balloon to as many as 37 points before the final horn sounded.
Overall, Fisher was 35-of-60 (.583) from the floor and converted 17-of-23 attempts from the free throw line. The Cardinals finished with 20 assists overall and had 30 points off of 23 Houghton turnovers. Defensively, Fisher accounted for a season-high 17 steals in the win.
The Cardinals will return to action on Friday as they take on second-seeded Nazareth College in the semifinal round of the Empire 8 Championship. The four-team tournament will take place at Alfred University after the Saxons toppled the Golden Flyers on Tuesday to clinch the top overall spot in the conference standings.
