BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team kept its winning streak going on Sunday afternoon as the Cardinals took down D'Youville and Medaille both in straight sets, extending their winning streak to 10 matches. With the two victories Fisher improves to 11-3 overall, while the Spartans fall to 1-5 and the Mavericks move to 0-7 overall.
During its 10 match winning streak, Fisher has only dropped five sets combined over the past 10 matches, while also winning six of them in straight sets.
The Fisher offense got off to a hot start versus D'Youville as the Cardinals tallied 11 kills in the first set with only two errors and a .409 hitting percentage. After the Spartans rallied back to within two midway through the first set, Fisher was able to rattle off a 9-3 scoring run to close out the first set win.
Matt Broderick led the way in the first set as the junior led a 6-0 scoring run from the service line, while also notching three early kills.
Much like the second set, Fisher was able to gain an early advantage on the scoreboard, however D'Youville once again battled back to within two points midway through the second set. Eventually after both sides traded points back-and-forth, a
Mike Strumpfler kill pushed Fisher ahead two sets to none.
Moving into the third set, it was all Fisher from the start as the Cardinals jumped out to a quick 13-3 lead with the help of six early kills. From there, Fisher did not look back as
Ivan Lopez and
Andres Ramirez led the offensive attack on the way to a straight set victory.
As a team, the Cardinals finished with a .282 average hitting as Broderick and Ramirez led the way with nine kills apiece. Strumpfler added a game-high five blocks, while
Paul Hackford pitched in a game-high 27 assists.
The Cardinal offense once again showed their dominance versus Medaille, finishing with 32 kills compared to the 23 for the Mavericks.
Both teams battled throughout the majority of the first set, until eventually both sides were knotted up at 22 apiece. From there, two kills from
Josh Bigford as well as a
Kevin Cahill service ace gave Fisher the hard-earned first set victory.
The second set began with more back-and-forth action from both teams, leading to an 11-10 advantage for Medaille. However, it was there when Fisher regained control and finished off the second set with a 15-6 scoring run as Strumpfler finished with five total blocks in the fifth set alone.
The Cardinals carried the momentum into the third set as Fisher took home the straight set victory with the help of a number of scoring runs, including a five-point run to finish off the third set.
Bigford led the Fisher offense with nine kills and a .364 hitting percentage, while Ramirez added another eight kills. Lopez finished the match with four blocks and
Paul Hackford finished with 25 assists and four blocks as well.
David Cerqua once again led the Fisher defense nine digs from the libero spot.
The Cardinals return to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. when they welcome Nazareth to Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium for their first United Volleyball Conference matchup of the 2019 season.
