Women's Basketball Holds Elmira to 24 Points as Fisher Runs Away in a 51-Point Drubbing

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team held visiting Elmira College to just 17 percent shooting from the floor and forced 21 turnovers on Friday night as the Cardinals overwhelmed the Soaring Eagles, 75-24, in an Empire 8 bout inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.  With the win, Fisher improved to 16-7 overall and 10-4 in the conference while the visitors fell to 6-17 overall and 2-12 against conference competition.

As a team, Fisher had 14 different players score in the win led and tallied 15 assists on 30 made field goals.  Overall, the Cardinals shot 30-of-73 (.411) from the field and out-rebounded their opponent, 62-32.  Fisher's 24 points allowed marks its lowest total since 2013 when the Cardinals yielded just 17 in a win over Southern Vermont.

Coming off their hard-fought double overtime win at Hartwick on Sunday, the Cardinals' offense continued to fire on all cylinders as head coach Melissa Kuberka's squad came out of the gates firing.  Senior Erin Hulbert set the tone from the opening tip after sending a half court pass to Ella Eckert for a layup that sparked a 10-2 Fisher run that was capped off with back-to-back 3-pointers from Hulbert and Miranda Lynch.

The Soaring Eagles slowed the momentum with a bucket in the paint, but the Cardinals closed out the first quarter with seven unanswered points including four from Leah Koonmen to take a 21-4 lead into the second frame.

Leading by 17 points to begin the period, Fisher saw its lead dip to 15 points after Elmira posted a 6-2 burst to make it 25-10.  As the half progressed, Fisher continued to stymie the Soaring Eagles on both ends of the court as the home team scored 12 straight points and held their guest to just one point over the closing four minutes of the first half to hold a 37-11 cushion at the break.

The second half wasn't much different as the Cardinals used an 8-0 run to open the third quarter before building a 34-point lead with one quarter left to play.

The fourth quarter was arguably Fisher's best of the season as the team surrendered just one point in 10 minutes and forced three turnovers before the final horn sounded on a 51-point win.

Koonmen led all scorers with 11 points in 19 minutes while Eckert finished with nine points and seven rebounds overall.  Hulbert stuffed the stat sheet again with seven points, six rebounds and a game-high six dimes. Mallory Wood and Lynch each chipped in with eight points while Maisy Booth, Lauren Robbins and Sam Fischer netted five points apiece off the bench.

The Cardinals will look to keep their momentum going at 2 p.m. on Saturday when they welcome Alfred University to campus for another Empire 8 bout.  The game will have added meaning as the team will honor Hulbert prior to the first whistle as part of Senior Day.
