Men's Basketball Moves on in Woodcliff Tournament Behind 40 Points from Williams and Robinson

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Senior Sammy Robinson and sophomore Sean Williams combined to score 40 points on Sunday as the St. John Fisher College men's basketball team defeated SUNY Poly, 82-68, in the opening round of the annual Woodcliff Hotel and Spa Tournament inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court.  With the win, Fisher improved to 5-5 on the year while the Wildcats fell to 3-5 overall.

Fisher will be back in action at 3 p.m. on Monday when it takes on SUNY Cortland in the championship game after the Red Dragons made quick work of Pitt-Bradford, 98-73.

The Cardinals looked to set the tempo from the get-go as Matt Asenjo drove the lane and completed an old-fashioned 3-point play to stake Fisher to an early lead.  Ahead by two points with nearly four minutes gone by, the home team continued to push the pace as Louden Porter buried back-to-back 3-pointers to spark a 15-5 run that stretched the Cardinals' advantage to 12 points, 24-12.

As the half ticked away, the momentum would cool for Fisher as SUNY Poly was able to erase a double-digit deficit and pull ahead by three after orchestrating a 16-2 run of its own to hold a 32-29 edge with under five minutes to play before halftime.

Trailing by one possession, Fisher reclaimed the lead after a lay-up by Asenjo, however, the Wildcats knocked down a triple at the top of the key to take a one-point lead, 37-36, into the halftime break.

As the second half got underway, the Wildcats' edge would grow to as many as seven points following a 3-pointer in the corner, but Fisher would eventually chip away as a pair of free throws from Dennis Hare ignited a 9-0 burst that pushed the home team ahead, 57-53, with 9:01 left to play in the game.

Both teams continued to swap buckets down the stretch as a triple from Williams followed by a free throw from Asenjo staked the Cardinals to a six-point lead with under three minutes on the clock.  SUNY Poly would cut the gap to four points on its ensuing possession, but that was as close as it would get as Fisher buried eight free throws in the closing minutes to earn the double-digit win.

Williams' 20 points came on a 5-of-6 effort from the floor while the guard was perfect at the line after going 7-for7.  Williams also added three rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals in the win.  Robinson finished with 20 points and added three rebounds of his own while Asenjo contributed 17 points in 31 minutes.  Hare provided a boost off the bench with nine points and seven rebounds while Porter added nine points in the win.
