Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Robinson's 26 Not Enough as Men's Basketball is Stung by Wooster

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team suffered an 81-80 loss on Sunday at the hands of Wooster College as both teams took part in the opening round of the third annual Mauro Pannagio Tournament inside DME Sports Academy.  With the loss, Fisher fell to 4-4 on the season while the Fighting Scots improved to 6-1.

Senior Sammy Robinson erupted for a season-high 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting as the forward also grabbed six rebounds and nabbed two steals.  Brendan Trapper added 14 points in the loss and five rebounds while Dennis Hare finished with 11 points and three assists.  Nick Klein scored a career-high 10 points off the bench and Matt Asenjo contributed eight points over 20 minutes.

The Cardinals held the lead throughout the first 10 minutes of play until Wooster erased a four-point deficit and caught fire from the floor as the Fighting Scots scored 14 unanswered points over the next seven minutes before a lay-up by Asenjo temporarily halted the bleeding.  Trailing by eight, 31-28, Fisher continued to battle down the stretch and cut the gap to five points before Wooster would knock down  a 3-pointer at the buzzer to take an eight-point edge into the break, 37-29.

As the second half got underway, both teams were on from distance as the Fighting Scots buried consecutive 3-point field goals while Sean Williams countered on the other end of the floor to keep it a seven point affair.

From there, the Cardinals would pull to within five, but Wooster would get to the free throw line and eventually built an 11-point cushion with seven minutes gone by.

As the half continued to tick down, the Cardinals were within striking distance and would take advantage of a cold spell by Wooster as Fisher rattled off nine of the game's next 10 points to knot things up at 69-69.

Both teams would exchange baskets over the next 30 seconds until a 3-pointer in the corner from Robinson sparked a 7-0 burst for Fisher that staked the home team to a five-point advantage, 76-71, with just over a minute still showing on the clock.

Clinging to a two-possession lead, Fisher was stung from distance as the Fighting Scots buried another 3-pointer to pull to within one.  Ahead 79-78, the Cardinals went to the free throw line with a chance to push their lead back to three points.  After knocking down the first attempt, Fisher's second offering missed its mark while Wooster came down with the board and pushed the ball across the time line.  After settling into their offensive set, the Fighting Scots got the shot they wanted and heaved up a 3-pointer that found its mark and staked them to a one-point lead, 81-80.

Down by one, the Cardinals called a timeout to draw up a final play, but were unable to stave off defeat as the shot missed its mark as the horn sounded.

The Cardinals are scheduled to be back in action at 12 p.m. on Monday when they close out the Mauro Pannagio Tournament in Florida against St. Joseph's College of Maine.
