Trapper's Career-High Sets Tone in No. 25 Men's Basketball's 98-81 Win Over Cazenovia

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Five players finished in double figures on Friday night as the nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College men's basketball team erupted for a 98-81 win over Cazenovia College in the 10th annual Hilbert College Tip-Off Tournament inside the Hafner Recreation Center.  With the win, No. 25 Fisher evened its season record at 1-1 while the Wildcats fell to 0-1.

Sophomore Brendan Trapper finished with a career-high 21 points off the bench on 9-of-12 shooting to go along with four rebounds.  Sammy Robinson, who became the 25th player in program history to surpass 1,000 career points on Tuesday, added his second straight double-double with 18 points and a career-best 16 boards while Dennis Hare and Louden Porter each chipped in with 15 points in the win.  Matt Asenjo contributed 14 points, eight boards and two steals overall while Sean Williams was the driving force behind the Cardinals' offense with a career-high nine assists.

It was all Fisher from the get-go as head coach Mike Grosodonia II's team jumped out to a double-digit lead on a pair of free throws from Robinson just past the midway point in the first half.  From there, a 3-pointer from Cazenovia cut the deficit down to eight points, but Fisher countered with a 16-3 run capped off by back-to-back 3-pointers from Trapper and Porter to open up a 21-point advantage, 41-20.

The lead would eventually grow to be 22 points following two freebies from Hare before the Wildcats closed out the opening period with six of the half's final nine points to make it 49-30 leading into intermission.
Coming out of the break, Fisher continued to keep its foot on the gas as the lead ballooned to 25 points, 69-44, with six minutes gone by.

As the second half wore on, momentum would shift with Cazenovia stringing together an 18-2 burst that included 12 unanswered points to climb to within seven points, 71-64.  The Cardinals would regroup, however, as they quickly built their lead back to 18 points courtesy of a 3-pointer from Robinson that made it 94-76.

The Cardinals' margin would grow to 20 points in the final seconds before Cazenovia connected on a shot from downtown to close out the game with Fisher ahead by 17.

As a team, the Cardinals were 36-of-67 (.537) from the floor and were credited with 25 assists overall.  Fisher knocked down 20-of-29 attempts from the free throw line and out-rebounded Cazenovia, 48-34.  Fisher's defense was clicking on Friday as well as it held the Wildcats to under 40 percent from the floor and forced its opponent in to 17 turnovers.

Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Saturday where it will play in the championship game of the Hilbert College Tip-Off Tournament.
