MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The St. John Fisher College field hockey team battled with the Middlebury Panthers on Sunday afternoon at Kohn Field. The Cardinals ended up on the losing side of a close 2-1 game against the number one ranked team in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association Poll.
Senior
Kelly Bergamo made a career-high 11 saves in the effort. Senior
Reghan Amoroso scored Fisher's lone tally of the game with junior
Alyssa Andres picking up the assist. The Cardinals drop to 11-4 on the season while Middlebury keeps its undefeated season alive with a record of 13-0.
The Cardinals were on the attack early with both senior
Lindsay Scott and junior
Bre Socker earning shots on goal in the opening minutes. The Panthers took a 1-0 lead just past the six-minute mark of the first quarter. That score would hold for the rest of the period.
Fisher was rewarded a penalty corner about a minute into the second stanza. Off a
Danila Casseri corner, Andres would take the ball and find Amoroso for the score to knot things up at one-all. It was Amoroso's fifth goal of the season, which ties a career-high in a single season for the senior.
The Panthers would answer with another goal over two minutes later to take back the advantage. Bergamo made a total of four saves in the quarter to keep it a one-goal game heading into halftime.
Bergamo shined in the third quarter with six saves in the period and four saves over a four-minute span early. The Cardinals' defense then limited the Panthers to only one shot on goal in the final quarter. On the offensive end, Fisher struggled to create a scoring chance down the stretch and would fall short in the contest.
Socker led Fisher with two shots on goal in the game. The Cardinals now head to Elmira on Wednesday looking to stay perfect in conference against the Soaring Eagles. Game is slated to start at 3:30 p.m.
