ALBANY, N.Y. - One goal was all that the St. John Fisher College men's soccer team needed to knock off Sage in conference play at ACP Field as the Cardinals took home a 1-0 victory. With the win, the Cardinals improved to 3-8-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the Empire 8 while the Gators dropped to 6-6 on the year and 1-3 in the conference.
The Cardinals came out strong as the offense produced seven shots in the first 45 minutes as opposed to the Gators' five.
After halftime, Sage was quickly awarded two corner kicks and took two shots, but the tide turned in the Cardinals' favor. Aaron Wilkins passed a ball to freshman forward Ben Woolingham who uncorked a shot that rung the back of the Sage net. The 59-minute goal signaled the striker's first collegiate goal.
Fisher's defense was solid as it allowed just two more opponent shots in the remainder of the contest.
The Cardinals tallied nine shots on the day, led by Justin Bonetto who took three. Jeff Meyers and Colin Witman followed with two shots each. Woolingham and Brian Netto tallied one apiece.
Justin Miles saved all five shots he faced in the match as he raised his save percentage to .870 and his record to 2-1-1.
The Cardinals have a week off before 1 p.m. on Saturday October 19 when they host East Avenue rival Nazareth College for a conference match at Growney Stadium.
