PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team defeated the Golden Eagles of the College at Brockport for the first time since 2008 with a final score of 1-0. With the win, the Cardinals moved to 2-1 overall, while the Golden Eagles dropped to 2-1 in the 2018 campaign.
Fisher would come out firing in the first half with a team-high five shots in the first 45 minutes of play. Carli Kovarik was awarded a direct kick in the 35th minute and rocketed a shot which was tipped by the Brockport keeper.
Kovarik and Logan Chase fired off two shots each in the first half, while Emily Murray took one of her own.
Goalkeeper Melissa McGowan totaled three saves to keep the Cardinals and Golden Eagles squared away at one at the completion of the half.
Solid defensive play from Nora Broderick, Mia Tirabassi and Tara Marcello would fend off the threatening Brockport offense in beginning minutes of the second half.
In the 80th minute of play, the Cardinals would come storming down the field. Freshman Kovarik would break away from the Golden Eagle defense, dribble past the keeper, and drill the ball into the back of the net to put Fisher up a goal.
Brockport took three shots in the last nine minutes of play but Fisher's lone goal would be enough as the Cardinals hung on to capture their second win of the 2018 season.
Fisher finished with a season-high 14 shots in the game. Kovarik ripped a team-high six shots, while Murray and Chase took three shots apiece.
McGowan picked up her second win of the season in net after stopping four total saves in the nightcap.
The Cardinals return to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as Fisher is slated to take on the Pioneers of Marietta College in non-conference play.
