Women's Volleyball Takes Down D'Youville In Straight Sets

BUFFALO, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team took down D'Youville College in straight sets on Tuesday evening 25-14, 25-12, 25-22. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-5 overall on the season, while the Spartans fall to 0-10 in 2018.

Fisher's offense came out fast and furious in the first set, committing only two errors with 13 kills on 22 attempts. Both teams traded points back and forth to begin the match, however after taking a 12-10 lead, the Cardinals rattled off a 13-4 run to end the first set.

Freshman Julia Halsey started the Fisher scoring run, while three Izzy Smith kills helped maintain the momentum. Many Cardinals were getting in on the action early, as Smith, Halsey, Rebecca Hay, and Erica Pawlewicz put away the final four points for Fisher.

Fisher continued its offensive dominance in the second set, totaling 11 kills with only four errors. Olivia Levulis was the Cardinal to start the scoring run this time around, as the Cardinals opened up a 9-2 run to give themselves an early 13-4 advantage. The offense continued its steady play throughout the set, as kills from Levulis and Alea Steigerwald helped close out the second set.

Much like the start of the first set, both teams traded points back and forth for the majority of the third set. Late in the third as the scoreboard read 20-20, Steigerwald put away two straight kills to give Fisher a huge momentum swing. Fisher did not look back from there as Levulis and Steigerwald kills capped off the straight set win.

The Cardinals finished the match with a hitting percentage of .338, with Smith and Steigerwald leading the way with 11 kills apiece. Halsey pitched in seven kills, while Levulis and Pawlewicz each added four.

Hay and Phoebe Kane split the setting duties for the Cardinals, with Hay finishing with 18 assists and Kane notching 15. Libero Elise Kreuz finished with a team-high 16 digs, to go along with three service aces and four assists.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday, when they welcome Fredonia to Manning and Napier Gymnasium for the first home match of the 2018 season at 6 p.m.
