Men's Lacrosse Takes Down Alfred In Empire 8 Action

Alfred, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team took down Alfred University on Saturday afternoon 9-5 in Empire 8 Conference action. With the win, the Cardinals improve to 7-4 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8, while the Saxons fall to 6-5 overall and 2-1 in the conference.

Back and forth action started off the first quarter, as the scoreboard read 4-4 after the first 15 minutes. Freshman, Nicholas Miller got the scoring started for Fisher at the 14:22 mark of the first quarter. Alfred was able to bounce back, however, scoring three goals of its own to regain the lead, 3-1.

Zach Wagner and Miller were able to rally the Cardinals back to make it a 3-3 contest midway through the first quarter. Chance Gates and Miller both picked up an assist on the Fisher second and third goals.

Both teams were able to score with less than one minute remaining in the first half, with Alfred scoring first with 41 seconds remaining, while Miller and Wagner each found the back of the of the net a 51 second mark and then at the one score mark before the first half quarter sounded.

Andrew Rosso was the lone goal scorer in the second quarter as the senior attacker notched his team-lead 22nd goal of the 2018 season. Fisher was able to carry a 5-4 lead into the halftime break.

The Cardinals started off the scoring in the third quarter as Miller scored his hat-trick goal less than two minutes into the second half off an assist from Roger Panera. Wagner notched his hat-trick goal at the 10:05 mark of the third quarter giving the Cardinals the 7-4 advantage. Following the Wagner, goal, Miller was able to finish his fourth of the game off a feed from Jack Mulvihill giving Fisher a fourth goal advantage heading into the final quarter.

Both teams were held scoreless for the majority of the final 15 minutes, until Mulvihill notched his first goal of the game giving Fisher the 9-4 lead late in the quarter. Alfred was able to beat Justin Townsend at the 2:30 mark of the final quarter, however, Fisher was able to hold on to earn its seventh win of the season.

Senior goalkeeper Townsend was able to improve his overall record to 7-4 on the year, after finishing with 10 saves on the day. Joe Post was a monster gain in the faceoff circle as he was able to finish 11-for-14 overall.  He grabbed a game-high seven ground balls.

The Cardinals are back in action on Monday when they travel to SUNY Genseso for a non-conference matchup scheduled or a 4 p.m. faceoff.
