ROME, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College baseball team picked up two more wins on Tuesday to run its winning streak to seven games as the Cardinals took both ends of an Empire 8 doubleheader against SUNY Canton at Delutis Field. With the wins, Fisher, which is receiving votes in the latest D3baseball.com national poll, moved to 23-7 and 11-3 in the conference standings. Canton fell to 6-23 and 3-9, respectively, with the sweep.
FISHER 2, CANTON 0
Junior
Kyle Chambers got the call in game one as the Queensbury native, who had started just one game in 28 career appearances prior to Tuesday, baffled the Canton lineup over seven shutout innings. Chambers allowed just three hits – all singles – and fanned two to move to 3-1 on the season.
After six scoreless innings, Fisher finally broke through in the top of the seventh with two runs on just one hit. After a groundout to start the frame,
Stephen Edgett beat out an infield single and moved into scoring position when
Justin Graham worked a walk.
Antony Mantova moved both runners up a bag with a groundout before the Roos loaded the bases after plunking
Thomas Pasquale. With two outs on the board and trouble brewing, Canton was unable to retire the side as the Roos' pitcher lost control of the zone and drilled
Scott Eisenmenger to push a run across. As the frame continued,
Ryan Fahy worked a bases-loaded walk to score Graham and give the visitors a two-run edge.
In the home half of the seventh, Chambers yielded a walk, but got the next hitter to line out to left before his defense turned a game-ending double play to seal the win.
Fisher managed five hits in the win led by Pasquale who went 2-for-3 at the dish. Mantova was 1-for-4 while
Jack Vivinetto and Edgett each collected a hit apiece.
FISHER 10, CANTON 1
The Cardinals recorded 11 hits in the night cap with
Victor Konstantinovsky leading the way with two hits including a double and a home run to go along with a game-high four RBI. Edgett produced two doubles in four at-bats while Mantova was 2-for-6 in the win.
After giving up an unearned run in the first inning, Fisher bounced back in the top of the second as Konstantinovsky homered for the third straight game to put the Cardinals ahead, 2-1.
Head coach
Brandon Potter's team pushed its lead to four runs in the top of the fourth after belting two hits.
Ryan Simmons led off with a single to left and moved into scoring position when the next hitter,
Ryan Brown, worked a walk. With two on and no outs, Konstantinovsky came up with two more RBI with a double to right before scoring on an error to make it 5-1.
Fisher was at it again in the eighth inning as Mantova and Eisenmenger each drove in a run to go along with an unearned score to make it 8-1. The visitors added two more runs in the top of the ninth with Edgett and
Justin Graham each plating a run to give the Cardinals their 11th win in Empire 8 play.
DJ Mendenhall started for Fisher and went four innings overall. He allowed one unearned run on three hits and put two away via strikes before being lifted in favor of
Matt Toohey. Toohey was credited with the win and moved to 2-0 after throwing three scoreless innings with three strikeouts.
Jason Wasilnak pitched a pair of scoreless innings to cap the sweep.
Up next, Fisher will travel across town at 4 p.m. on Thursday to battle The College at Brockport in a non-conference bout. The Cardinals came out on top in their last meeting with the Golden Eagles, 10-6, as Eisenmenger went 3-for-4 and recorded his 200th career hit.
