No. 15 Softball Shuts Out Elmira in Doubleheader Sweep

ELMIRA, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball improved to 21-7 on the season as the Cardinals, who rank 15th in the latest National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll, swept the Elmira College Soaring Eagles behind 27 hits in the two-game set.  Fisher, which has yet to lose in Empire 8 play, closed out the weekend at 8-0 in the conference standings while Elmira fell to 4-9 overall and 2-8 against Empire 8 opponents.

FISHER 6, ELMIRA 0

Fisher got on the board early with one run on three hits in the top of the first to set the tone.  Emily Trotman led off the game with a single to center and quickly stole second.  After Katie Mazierski dropped a bunt single, Sarah Kubik, who lifted Fisher to a sweep of Stevens on Saturday with a two-run home run in the 10th inning, picked up where she left off with an RBI-single through the left side to make it 1-0.

After setting the side down in order in the home half of the first, Fisher struck again in the top of the second.  Mary Claire Grosvenor blasted a double to center and advanced to third when Emma Savas reached on an infield error.  Savas promptly swiped second to put two runners in scoring position as Trotman pushed a run across with a groundout to short.  Leading by two, Maizerski padded the Cardinals' lead as the senior All-American singled down the left field line to drive in Savas before Elmira could get off the field.

In the third inning, Julia Sortisio plated a run with a single before the visitors tacked on two more in the top of the fifth courtesy of three hits including back-to-back RBI singles from Allison Uberty and Jill Murray to make it 6-0.

Lindsey Thayer moved to 14-3 on the season with the win after the senior pitched seven scoreless innings.  Thayer, who has not allowed a run over her last 47.1 innings of work, scattered just three hits and tallied 14 strikeouts.

FISHER 13, ELMIRA 0 (FIVE INNINGS)

Once again, the Cardinals got off to a quick start after jumping out to a 3-0 lead on the strength of two hits in the top of the first.  Trotman reached on an infield error and proceeded to steal second before taking third on a passed ball.  Ashley Prince staked Fisher to a 1-0 lead with an RBI single to right center before Kubik stepped to the dish and crushed a two-run home run to make it a three-run affair.

After a scoreless home half of the first, Fisher was at it again in the top of the second with five more runs on six hits after sending 10 hitters to the plate overall.  Grosvenor led off the inning with a single to center and moved to second when Savas sacrificed her over.  Marissa Kirker drove in a run with a single up the middle before Trotman followed suit with an RBI-single of her own.  Mazierski, who finished the day sitting on 199 career hits,
worked a walk before Prince singled to load the bases.  Kubik, Sammie Torlish and Sortisio kept the momentum going as each collected an RBI to stake Fisher to an 8-0 lead through two innings of play.

Fisher put up another crooked number in the top of the fifth with five more runs on seven hits.  Maddie Klidonas delivered the big hit in the form a three-run bases clearing double while Prince and Kubik each followed with an RBI-double of their own to make it 13-0 in the visitor's favor.

Senior pitcher Monica Moses moved to 6-2 with the win as the Olean native allowed just one hit over four innings of work.  Uberty pitched the fifth inning and yielded one hit before striking out the side.

Fisher will look to extend its current six-game winning streak at 3 p.m. on Tuesday when it welcomes The Sage Colleges to the Softball Complex for the first time in program history.
