ROCHESTER, N.Y. –
Andrew Rosso became the seventh 100 goal scorer in the St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse program's history, as the Cardinals took down Nazareth College on the road Wednesday afternoon by a score of 11-8. With the win, Fisher improves to 9-5 overall and 3-2 in the Empire 8, while the Golden Flyers fall to 4-11 overall and 2-3 in the conference.
The senior from Kirkville, N.Y. joins a list of six other former men's lacrosse student-athletes to achieve the century mark for career-goals now with 102, while also currently sitting third in program history for career assists with 78.
Nazareth jumped on the scoreboard first at the 12:42 mark of the first quarter, however Fisher was quick to answer.
Connor McClain notched his second goal of the season, off of a Rosso feed from behind the cage to tie the game back up at one at the 10:30 mark.
Back to back Golden Flyer tallies gave the home side the 3-1 lead with seven and half minutes remaining in the first quarter. On the man-up advantage,
Nicholas Miller was able to notch his 27
th of the season, as Rosso picked up his second assist of the afternoon.
Rosso scored his first goal of the game at the 1:17 mark, as the senior ripped a shot from about 10 yards out past the Nazareth goalkeeper to tie the game up at three goals apiece. Miller broke the tie with only 14 seconds remaining in the quarter, with his second goal of the game off of a Danny Turk assist.
Fisher was the first on the scoreboard in the second quarter when
Jack Mulvihill scored the Cardinals' fourth consecutive goal, giving them a 5-3 advantage. After being held scoreless for a little over 12 minutes, the Golden Flyers were able to beat
Justin Townsend at the 11:09 mark of the quarter, cutting the Cardinal lead to just one.
Danny Turck made sure the one goal lead was short lived however, as the junior scored his 13
th of the season off of a fabulous Individual effort inside of the offensive zone. Nazareth was able to answer at the 5:48 mark, again cutting the Fisher lead to one goal at 6-5.
Again on the man-advantage, Turck took advantage and tallied his second consecutive goal off of a feed from
Zach Wagner. However, Nazareth quickly answered off the ensuing faceoff just nine seconds after the Turk tally, as the scoreboard now read 7-6 with just over three minutes remaining in the first half.
At the 1:59 mark of the second quarter, Rosso notched his 100
th career goal giving the Cardinals the 8-6 advantage heading into the halftime break.
Rosso came out of the halftime break not satisfied with his 100
th goal, as the senior attackman scored his hat-trick goal, just 90 seconds after the opening whistle of the second half.
Both teams were held scoreless for the remainder of the third quarter, with the Cardinals holding on to a 9-6 lead heading into the final 15 minutes. Townsend was huge between the pipes for Fisher in the quarter, making five total saves, three coming from point-blank range.
To start the final quarter, it was Rosso again quickly scoring his fourth of the game with
Chance Gates this time picking up the assist. Mulvihill was able to finish off a
Zach Wagner feed that continued the scoring for Fisher with its second four-goal run of the game to increase its lead to 11-6.
After two straight Nazareth goals to cut the lead back to three goals, Fisher was able to hold on for the remaining two minutes and earn a huge third win in the Empire 8 Conference.
The goalkeeper Townsend finished with eight saves in the win, as the senior notched his ninth win of the season.
Joe Post finished 12-for-19 in the faceoff circle, while also grabbing a game-high six ground balls.
Kyle O'Dea led the way defensively causing a team-high two turnovers, while
Cole Fowler and Mulvihill each added one apiece.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, when they host Houghton for an Empire 8 matchup as well as Senior Day at Growney Stadium at 1 p.m.
