Men's Volleyball Falls to No. 11 NYU In UVC Action

Rochester, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team took the floor for its second United Volleyball Conference matchup of the weekend at Nazareth College, taking on No. 11 New York University. The Cardinals fell to the Violets in three sets 20-25, 17-25, 20-25, now standing at 12-14 overall and 1-8 in the conference, while NYU improved to 15-7 and 5-4 in the UVC.

Both sides traded points back and forth to start off the opening set. The scoreboard read 12-11 with Fisher having the advantage, as Ben De La Cruz quickly notched two kills. However, NYU was able to put together a four point run, while also holding off a late Fisher three point run to take set one by five.

After falling behind 9-4 early in the second set, Fisher rallied behind a Tyler Richards kill to jump back within two points at 11-9. A Joe Kenney kill caused NYU to call a timeout as the Cardinals tried to capture the momentum. However, the Violets carried a lead throughout the second set and were able to capture a two sets to none lead.

Once again, back and forth action carried the first half of the third set. Mike Strumpfler and Tyler English tallied three kills apiece as Fisher only trailed 17-15. Fisher and NYU battled back and forth to gain the edge, however it was NYU taking the third set and the match.

Strumpfler and English led the way offensively for Fisher out of the middle, both finishing with six and five kills respectively. Richards notched three of his own, while Matt Broderick, Kenney, and De La Cruz each added two.

Paul Hackford notched 20 assists to go along with three kills and three digs. Libero David Cerqua led the way defensively finishing with a game-high seven digs.

The Cardinals are back in action on Friday when they travel to Elmira to take on the No. 15 Soaring Eagles at 6 p.m.
