ELMIRA, N.Y. – Three different players had three hits as the St. John Fisher College baseball team ran its winning streak to five games on Monday after cruising to an 14-5 win over Elmira College in an Empire 8 clash at Dunn Field. With the win, Fisher now sits at 9-6 overall and 3-0 in the Empire 8 standings while the Soaring Eagles fell to 0-12 overall and 0-3 against conference opponents.
RJ Kuruts picked up his second win of the season and is now 2-1 overall after pitching five innings where he allowed one run on four hits with four strikeouts.
DJ Mendenhall threw a scoreless inning in relief while
Jared Wren and
Jack Delaney combined to throw two innings.
Caleb Lee threw in the ninth frame and yielded four runs on two hits before being lifted for
Rylan Baker who notched the final two outs.
Victor Konstantinovsky was 3-for-5 in the win with four RBI after smacking a grand slam in the seventh inning. The senior catcher also produced a double and scored two runs.
Justin Graham and
Thomas Pasquale each had three hits on the day with Graham scoring a team-leading four runs. Senior
Scott Eisenmenger was 2-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.
After swapping runs in the first inning, Fisher plated two more in the top of the third. Graham led off with a double to right and came around to score when Pasquale singled to left. With one on and no outs,
Ryan Simmons smacked a single up the middle before Pasquale scored on a double play to make it 3-1 in the Cardinals' favor.
In the fourth,
Stephen Edgett dropped a sacrifice bunt with
Ryan Brown on third to make it 4-0 before the Cardinals added three more runs in the fifth frame with Eisenmenger coming away with a two-run single to left. As the inning continued, Brown lifted a sac fly to center to give the visitors a 7-1 cushion.
Leading by six runs in the top of the seventh, Fisher put the game out of reach after Konstantinovsky blasted a grand slam to left that scored Murphy,
Ryan Fahy and Eisenmenger to stake the Cardinals to an 11-1 lead.
The Cardinals weren't done there, however, as Graham,
Brent Carmello and
Patrick Kravitz each drove in a run in the top of the ninth as Fisher held a 14-1 edge heading to the home half of the frame. The Soaring Eagles finally broke through in the ninth with four runs on three hits and two Fisher errors, but the lead was too great to overcome as the Cardinals earned their third conference win of the season.
St. John Fisher will look to keep its momentum going at 6 p.m. on Wednesday as it travels across town to take on the University of Rochester Yellowjackets.
