PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team took down The College of Wooster on a windy Wednesday afternoon at Growney Stadium by a score of 13-10.
Chance Gates scored four goals in the contest helping Fisher improve to 5-2 overall on the season, while Wooster fell to 5-3 overall.
Back-and-forth action started off the first quarter of the game as the Fighting Scots scored the first goal of the game at the 9:19 mark.
Nicholas Miller scored the first for the Cardinals just over 40 seconds later off of an assist from fellow freshman
Jack Mulvihill. Another Wooster goal put the visiting team back up by one, until
Danny Turck notched his ninth of the season to tie the game back up. Wooster was able to put one past
Justin Townsend with 48 seconds remaining in the first quarter, which put them ahead 3-2 after the first 15 minutes.
Fisher flipped the script on Wooster in the second quarter, the Cardinals scored seven goals in total in the quarter, while also shutting out Wooster for the entire 15 minutes.
Gates scored his first of the day at the 10:37 mark off of a pass from
Andrew Rosso in front of the Wooster cage to tie the game back up for a third time. Gates tallied another goal three minutes later on the man-advantage, this time it was Miller picking up the assist. Turck put away his second of the game at the 3:44 mark with
Zach Wagner picking up his 10
th assist of the season. However just seven seconds later, Rosso finished off his team-leading 17
th of the season off of a great individual effort from the Cardinal faceoff man
Joe Post.
The next two Cardinal tallies came from Wagner and Miller on a non-releasable man-advantage opportunity only 40 seconds apart.
TJ VanDeusen and Turck picked up the assist respectively. The final goal of the quarter came off the stick of Rosso with just one second remaining on the clock before the halftime buzzer sounded off of a long range feed from Miller. The Cardinals showed off their offensive firepower, bringing a 9-3 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter was the opposite of the second however for Fisher. Wooster scored all five goals in the third and was able to keep the Cardinals off of the scoreboard for the entire 15 minutes. The Fighting Scots cut the Cardinal lead to just 10-8 heading into the final quarter.
Gates ended the scoring drought for Fisher with his hat-trick goal, four minutes into the fourth quarter. Two more Wooster goals cut the Fisher lead back to only one goal with nine and a half minutes remaining.
However, the Irving, N.Y. native Gates could not be stopped as he scored his fourth of the game off of a beautiful cross-crease feed from Rosso. VanDeusen sealed the win for Fisher with a goal of his own, this time Gates was on the assisting end to end a five-point day for the freshman.
Goalkeeper Townsend was credited with his fifth victory of the season after the senior finished with seven saves in the contest. Post was a monster at the faceoff X for the Cardinals finishing an incredible 21 for 26, while also picking up a game-high 12 ground balls.
The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday when the team travels to Oneonta, N.Y. to take on Hartwick College in the team's first Empire 8 Matchup of the 2018 season, scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
