Men's Volleyball Splits With D'Youville And SUNY Poly

PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's volleyball team hosted two matches Saturday afternoon inside the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Athletic Center. The Cardinals finished the day splitting their matches finishing 1-1. In the first match Fisher fell to D'Youville College in straight sets 17-25, 21-25, 23-25. Fisher then went on to defeat SUNY Poly in four sets 25-19, 21-25, 25-23, 25-22. The Cardinals improved to 6-3 overall on the season, while D'Youville moved to 2-5 and SUNY Poly fell to 4-6.

In the first set, the Cardinals climbed back after falling behind 20-10 and made it a five point game until eventually falling 17-25. Matt Broderick led the way in the set and also in the match notching four kills in the set and finishing the match with 11 kills, while hitting a very impressive .600 with only two errors on 15 attempts.

The next two sets saw back-and-forth action with both teams trading service aces and the momentum. Ben De La Cruz, Mike Strumpfler, and Kevin Cahill all finished with seven kills apiece. David Cerqua and Tyler Richards led the way defensively posting nine and four digs respectively. Setter Paul Hackford finished with a game-high 34 assists and added two kills and one service ace.

After taking the first set and falling in the second set versus SUNY Poly, Fisher dominated offensively in the final two sets by hitting a whopping .417 in the third and .400 in the fourth. The offensive charge was led by a number of Cardinals including De La Cruz who finished with a game-high 13 kills, Kenney who added 11, and Cahill's 10 kills. De La Cruz and Cahill both finished the match hitting over .300 at .360 and .333 respectively.

Broderick was dominate at the net once again, notching two block solos and seven blocking assists to go along with his four kills. Hackford again was impressive from the setter position, finishing with a season-high 41 assists while also adding three kills and three digs.

Cerqua seemed to be all over the court defensively, the freshman libero capped off the win with a new season-high 19 digs.

The Cardinals are back in action on Tuesday as they travel to Buffalo, N.Y. to take on Medaille College at 7 p.m.
