THERE'S AN APP FOR THAT: In case you missed it, Fisher Athletics launched its new mobile app last week - SJFC Athletics - in the App Store and on Google Play. The app, which gives fans, alumni, parents and more yet another opportunity to stay-up-to-date with the latest news, highlights, schedules and more, is free and features push notifications so you never miss a beat.
SERIES HISTORY: The Cardinals and Red Dragons have met 10 times over the last 30 years with both teams earning five wins apiece. Fisher and Cortland first met on the gridiron in 1988 as the Red Dragons came out on top behind a 48-10 win. Cortland would win the first four meetings in this series with three shutouts before the Cardinals rebuilt and put up a 47-37 win in 2003. Recent history is on Fisher's side as the Cardinals have won five of the last six meetings with Cortland's lone win in the last 15 years coming in 2015.
WHEN WE LAST MET: Last season, Fisher captured its second win of the season nearly one year to the day before this Saturday's matchup. On October 28th, the Cardinals put up a season-best 557 yards of total offense en route to a 35-28 Empire 8 win over the Red Dragons. The win, which came on Senior Day, was highlighted by nearly 300 yards of offense from senior running back
James Chambers who produced 199 yards on the ground and 90 receiving yards to go along with three touchdowns on the day. Chambers had eight receptions in the win and busted off an 80-yard TD run - the longest of his career. Overall, Fisher had a season-high 265 rushing yards on 39 carries in the win and totaled 292 passing yards on just 21 completions.
LAST TIME OUT: After earning its first win of the season on October 13th, Fisher was poised to make it two in a row last weekend, but was unable to stop the Mustangs as Morrisville emerged with a 35-7 win. The Cardinals' lone touchdown came in the second quarter on a quarterback sneak by
Alejandro Utset. Fisher was unable to generate much down the stretch as the team was held to just 160 total yards of offense as Morrisville controlled the tempo with 82 plays. In all, the visitors possessed the football for nearly 40 minutes.
SILVANIC'S BIG DAY: Junior
Tony Silvanic's performance on Saturday was a bright spot for the Cardinals' defense as the Castle Creek native racked up 18 tackles against a hard-running Morrisville team. Silvanic's performance marked a career-high for him and was the most tackles a Fisher defender has accounted for since
David Carroll made 20 stops against Utica last season - he needed five overtime periods to do it, though.
SPEAKING OF CAREER HIGHS...: Senior
Michael Burton continued to lead Fisher on special teams as the Syracuse native had a 60-yard punt last weekend. The kick, which was Burton's longest in a Fisher uniform - sailed to the Morrisville 22 before being downed. Burton's punt was the longest for Fisher since
Ryan Sweet boomed a program-record 72-yard punt against Hobart in 2013.
MAKING UNCLE RICO PROUD: Both teams have the potential to throw the ball a quarter mile on Saturday (440 yards)...
Napoleon Dynamite reference...stick with me....We all know Uncle Rico would have won states if coach had put him in, but both Fisher and Cortland feature a pass-first offense that can be explosive at times. To date, Cortland averages 354.3 passing yards per game, which ranks fifth in Division III and 2,480 yards through the air, which is the sixth-most in Division III this season. The Cardinals are also able to move the ball through the air as they rank fourth in the Empire 8 with 253.2 passing yards per game. Of Fisher's 87 first downs this season, 64 have been through the air. Look for both teams to test each other's secondary early and often on Saturday.
SCOUTING CORTLAND: We touched on Cortland's passing prowess earlier, but what often gets lost in the conversation is how good the Red Dragons' defense has been this season. Through seven games, Cortland ranks no worse than third in most major defensive categories. The Red Dragons rank second overall in points allowed (19.0), passing yards allowed (207.6), passing touchdowns allowed (9) and sacks (18). Take into account that they average nearly 48 points per game and rank eighth in the country with 46 touchdowns and they make a pretty formidable opponent.
On the offensive side of the ball, Brett Segala stepped right into Steven Ferreira's shoes and made everyone forget about the school's all-time record holder for passing. Through seven games, Segala has amassed nearly 2,200 yards and 24 touchdowns - both of which lead the conference. Not surprisingly, Cortland boasts three players with over 450 receiving yards led by Jake Smith's 791 yards on 40 catches and nine touchdowns. Nick Anderson has 510 receiving yards and 31 catches while Alex Wasserman has 479 yards through the air. Cortland also features a powerful running attack led by Johnnie Akins' 338 rushing yards.
Defensively, Isaac Hicks III leads the team with 48 tackles while Dan Appley has 8.5 tackles for a loss including five sacks. In the secondary, D'monte Woody owns three interceptions.
HALL OF FAME NEWS: St. John Fisher College is set to induct seven new members into its Athletics Hall of Fame later this fall including Brennan Fortune '08 who played a significant role in helping to build the team in to what it is today. Fortune could be considered not only one of the greatest offensive lineman to have played at Fisher, but one of the best in Division III history. A three-time All-American (one preseason), Fortune was named to the All-Decade Team by D3football.com. During his four seasons, Fisher amassed 41 wins including three berths in the NCAA Division III Championship. In 2006, the Cardinals vied for a national championship and reached the semifinals for the first time in team history. With Fortune on the line, the running game exploded for the Cardinals' offense as he helped block for Mark Robinson who is currently in our hall of fame. He is a three-time All-Conference honoree. Joining Fortune in this year's class are Jenna Waldron '10 (women's volleyball), Dave Wood '09 (men's lacrosse), Dan Jurik '10 (baseball), Rev. Albert Gallmon '74 (men's basketball), Nicole Lanieu '02 (softball) and Patrick Tobin '62 (Honorary).
WHAT'S NEXT: Saturday's contest at Cortland will mark the beginning of a two-game road trip as the Cardinals head to Alfred University on Saturday, November 3rd. From there, Fisher will close out the 2018 regular season at home on November 10th as it welcomes Buffalo State to campus for an Empire 8 bout. The game will have added significance as the College will honor the seven newest members of the Athletics Hall of Fame at halftime.
