Women's Soccer Upended Late By No. 18 Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College women's soccer team fell to the No. 18 University of Rochester 2-1 on Tuesday night, after a late goal in the 88th minute. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 4-3-2 overall on the season, while the Yellowjackets improve to 5-3-1.

The Cardinals came out firing, as Carli Kovarik tallied the first shot of the game for either team, just 20 seconds after the opening whistle, which was saved by the Rochester keeper. Kovarik wasn't done there, as the freshman found the back of the net at the 10:28 mark of the first half, as she was able to take a pass from Elise Olivo and finish off a breakaway, giving the Cardinals the early lead with her team-leading fifth goal of the season.

Rochester did not waste anytime tying the game back up at one however, as the Yellowjackets scored their first goal of the matchup just six minutes after Kovarik's tally at the 16:40 mark.
The Yellowjackets would finish with five shots in the opening 45 minutes, while the Cardinals notched two shots on goal, as the teams went into halftime knotted up at one apiece.

The Fisher defense stood tall for the majority of the second half, only allowing one shot to reach goal through the first 40 minutes of the second half. However, the Yellowjackets were able to find the back of the net with less than two minutes remaining in regulation to take home the non-conference victory.

Fisher battled hard throughout the entire game, with senior goalkeeper Melissa McGowan finishing with five saves, while Kovarik notched three shots.

The Cardinals are back in action on Saturday, when they welcome Hartwick College to Growney Stadium for an Empire 8 Conference matchup at 2 p.m.
