PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's basketball team scored a season-high 98 points as the Cardinals made quick work of the visiting Houghton College Highlanders, 98-48, on Friday inside Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium on Bobby Wanzer Court. With the win, Fisher, which has now won its last six games, moved to 8-4 and remained unbeaten in conference play at 3-0. Houghton fell to 3-11 overall and 0-5 in the conference standings.
It didn't take long for the Cardinals to assert themselves on the offensive end of the floor as Fisher opened up an 11-5 lead with five minutes gone by after converting five of its first nine attempts including a 3-pointer from
Michael D'Amico.
After swapping baskets over the next three minutes, Fisher began to hit its stride as the home team put together an 11-2 run highlighted by seven points from sophomore
Sammy Robinson to give the Cardinals a 14-point cushion, 27-13, with just over five minutes left to play in the first half.
Trailing by double digits, Houghton struggled settle into its offensive scheme as the Cardinals' defense limited the Highlanders to just three free throws over the final 4:14. Meanwhile, Fisher continued to build its advantage and closed out the opening frame with 16 of the game's next 21 points to head into the break with a 25 point lead.
Fisher carried its hot shooting over to begin the second half as the home team buried 10 of its first 12 field goal attempts and scored 27 of the game's next 37 points including eight straight points and two 3-pointers from senior
Alex Sausville to extend the lead to 42 points with 11:30 remaining in the game.
As play continued, Fisher built a 53-point edge after
Louden Porter drilled a 3-pointer in the corner on a feed from
Dylan Sacco en route to the all-important conference decision.
Overall, Fisher had 17 different players score in the win led by Robinson's 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting. Senior
Tyler English finished with 14 points and now sits just 48 points away from 1,000 career points. Sausville added 13 points and three rebounds off the bench while freshman
Mark Valeriani added seven points.
Matt Asenjo and
Ryan Henderson each contributed six points overall.
As a team, Fisher shot a season-best .609 from the field and made 39 of its 64 attempts. Defensively, the Cardinals held Houghton to just 17 field goals in 40 minutes.
Fisher will look to make it seven straight wins at 2 p.m. on Saturday when it welcomes Alfred University to Manning and Napier Varsity Gymnasium for an Empire 8 tilt.
