ERIE, P.A. – Senior
Anna Marcy made history on Friday as the outside hitter notched her 1,000th career kill as the St. John Fisher College women's volleyball team traveled to Erie, Pa. to compete in the Northwest Pennsylvania Challenge. In the first match of the evening, the Cardinals defeated the host Penn State Behrend in straight sets 25-13, 25-15, 25-21, before falling to the College of Wooster. The Cardinals' record is now 5-2 on the season, while the Lions fall to 1-4 and the Scots improve to 4-3.
Marcy, who moved into 10th place on Fisher's all-time kill list on Friday, continued her strong start to the season offensively finishing with a team-high 11 kills. Fellow senior
Katie Mazierski pitched in six and Sophomore
Izzy Smith added five.
Fisher had two seven point runs in the first set highlighted by three service aces, two from
Phoebe Kane and one by
Rebecca Hay. The Cardinals jumped out to an early 19-11 lead in the second set with the help of strong play from the front row from seniors Marcy, Mazierski, and
Madison Karwas. The Cardinals again jumped out to a 15-10 lead in the middle of third set and never looked back, finishing the match on a 10 to seven run.
Rebecca Hay finished with another consistent match from the setter position with 14 assists.
Elise Kreuz finished with a game 13 digs.
The second match of the evening came against the College of Wooster, where the Cardinal's fell in straight set 25-16, 25-17, 25-23.
For the fourth straight match, Marcy finished with double digit kills, this time with a game leading 10. Hay also matched her assist total from the earlier match, finishing with 14.
Kreuz and Mazierski led the way defensively putting up a season high 17 and 11 digs respectively.
The Cardinals will be back in action again tomorrow at the Northwest Pennsylvania Challenge as they take on Allegheny College at 11 a.m. followed by Thiel College at 1:15 p.m.
