ROCHESTER, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team came away with a win in its season opener at the Flower City Classic held at the University of Rochester as the Cardinals downed the Cougars of Misericordia College, 2-0. The win puts Fisher at 1-0-0 on the season, while Misericordia falls to 0-1-0 in the early goings.
The Cardinals' defense, led by
Dallas Kaiser and
Glenn Roschetzky, stifled the Cougars' front line at every turn as the team surrendered just one shot overall in the first half. However, neither team could generate much on the offensive end of the field. Fisher was credited with just two shots as
Jeff Meyers and
Joe Balls had one apiece. Both teams had scoring opportunities, with two corner kicks each in the first half.
The Cardinals brought up the tempo in the second half. Thirty seconds in,
Bryan Rollins struck a ball on goal that was turned away by the Misericordia keeper. Rollins corralled the rebound and followed that up with another header on goal, which just missed high above the net to keep things even.
Fisher would not relent and the scoreless tie would be broken in the 63rd minute as Rollins would go on to head in
Dallas Kaiser's throw in to stake the Cardinals to a one-goal edge.
Fisher struck again with 8:15 remaining in the second half, as Roschetzky sent a ball forward, headed into the left quadrant of the goal by
Brian Norman to bring it to 2-0 in Fisher's favor.
That proved to be enough as the defense fended off a pair of shots in the final minutes of the match. Rollins would finish the day with one goal and four shots, while Randall blasted two shots of his own. Overall, the Cardinals outshot the Cougars 8-5.
Joe Catalfamo picked up his first win of the season and secured the shutout after making two saves in 90 minutes of play.
Fisher returns to the pitch at 4 p.m. on Saturday in the third game of the Flower City Classic against the Titans of Illinois Wesleyan University.
