The St. John Fisher College men's lacrosse team suffered an 11-6 loss on Saturday against fellow Empire 8 member Alfred University. The game was a celebration of the program's seniors and head coach of the past 12 seasons, John Johnson.
The teams were mainly statistically even, besides in goals. Alfred only outshot the Cardinals 35-30 and both teams were an even 17-17 on ground ball pickups, and were even in caused turnovers with six each.
The Saxons would strike first with just over two minutes gone in the first period, and would score again a short while later to make it 2-0 with just under ten to go in the first. With 58 seconds remaining
Zach Wagner found the back of the net from
TJ VanDeusen as Fisher headed into the second down by one.
Alfred got the upper hand again in the second period scoring twice early on.
Glenn Roschetzky would cut the Saxon lead to 4-2 with 7 minutes to go till half on a pass from
Andrew Rosso. Alfred would net two more goals before half, one coming on a fast break at the buzzer.
After a goal by the Saxons early in the third,
Drew Brown scored on an assist from Wagner, and would score again a couple minutes later, cutting the Cardinal's deficit to 7-4.
Fisher found itself down 8-2 at the start of the first, and would not recover before the clock ran out. Roschetzky and Wagner would each net one more goal before the game concluded.
Wagner, Brown, and Roschetzky each finished with a pair of goals.
Matt Raap would finish with three ground balls and two caused turnovers.
The Cardinals end their season 8-8 overall and 3-5 in the Empire 8 Conference.
