No. 7 Softball Splits on the Road at Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team won the front end of a non-conference doubleheader against SUNY Cortland on Monday before falling in the nightcap at Dragon Field.  With the split, the No. 7 Cardinals ended the day at 19-5 while the Red Dragons moved to 17-7 with the split.

FISHER 3, CORTLAND 1

The Cardinals were the beneficiaries of another strong start in the circle by junior pitcher Lindsey Thayer as the Wintrop native threw a complete game and allowed just one unearned run on two hits.  Thayer, who moved to 12-4 on the season with the win, struck out six and did not yield a walk over seven innings.

Fisher did all of its damage in the top of the second inning after scoring three runs on four hits.  Sarah Kubik, who was named the Empire 8's Softball Player of the Week earlier in the day, led off with a single and moved up to second base when Jessica Sardina singled through the right side.  With runners at first and second and just out, Sam Schermerhorn moved both runners up before Emma Savas delivered a two-run singled to left to put Fisher ahead 2-0.  As the inning continued, Kristina Balsano drove in the Cardinals' third run with an RBI-single to right center before the Red Dragons could retire the side.

Cortland got a run back in the bottom of the third inning, but that was all it could manage as Thayer allowed just two base runners over the final four innings.

CORTLAND 5, FISHER 0

The Red Dragons rebounded in the second game with 12 hits off Fisher's starting pitcher, Monica Moses.  Cortland plated a pair in the second inning and extended its lead with runs in the third, fourth and fifth.

Moses was tagged with her first loss of the season and moved to 7-1 overall.  The sophomore pitched four innings and gave up four runs on eight hits with two strikeouts.  Allison Uberty threw the final two innings and surrendered one run on four hits.

Fisher will return to action at 3 p.m. on Wednesday when it jumps back into conference play with a doubleheader against Houghton College at the Softball Complex.
