Baseball Shuts Out Otterbein in Battle of the Cardinals

WINTER HAVEN Fla. – In the first game of the Russmatt Invite, the No. 10 St. John Fisher College baseball team shut out No. 24 Otterbein University, 3-0, on Sunday. With the victory, Fisher improves to 2-1 on the year while Otterbein moves 7-3.

It was a quick start for the Cardinals of Fisher as the team plated two in the opening frame. Fisher's first two batters, Allen Murphy and Jack Trotman, both earned a base after being struck by pitches. In the next at bat, Nate Roethel reached on a fielder's choice as Trotman was forced out at second. Roethel would steal second on the next at bat and with runners on second and third, Fisher was able to knock them in. Ryan Fahy hit a dribbler down the third base line that was fielded and then overthrown to first base. This allowed both Murphy and Roethel to score, giving Fisher its first lead.

In the second, Fisher added on an insurance run to solidify the lead. Justin Graham earned a base on balls to lead off and then would go on to steal second. Two batters later, Trotman ripped a line drive into the right field allowing Graham to reach home. That would be the conclusion of scoring for both teams.

Trotman finished the day with two hits on three at bats and the games sole RBI.

Jim Dawson got the start on the bump for the Cardinals, pitching 7.0 scoreless innings. The 6'6 hurler amassed two strikeouts on his way to his first win of the season, only allowing four hits.

Kevin Berge came in for relief in the eighth, allowing no hits through the final two and punching out a pair. The senior earned the save, his second in as many games.

Baseball will take to the diamond gain at 2:30 p.m. tomorrow as it takes on DeSales University.
