Softball Combines to Score 27 Runs in Sweep of Pitt-Bradford

BRADFORD, Pa. – The nationally-ranked St. John Fisher College softball team combined to produce 32 hits including a season-high 19 in the nightcap as the No. 5 Cardinals took both games of a non-conference doubleheader at The University of Pittsburgh-Bradford on Sunday afternoon.  With the wins, Fisher, which had not played since March 10, improved to 10-2 overall while the Panthers fell to 5-11 overall.

FISHER 10, PITT-BRADFORD 1 (5 Innings)

The Cardinals belted out 13 hits including six extra base knocks and junior pitcher Lindsey Thayer moved to 6-1 after surrendering just one run on three hits over 4.0 innings of work.  Thayer walked just one and struck out seven in the win.

Fisher set the tone early with five runs on five hits in the top of the first.  Karlie Neale put her team up by a pair of runs with a two-run single through the left side before Genevieve Paeglow followed suit with a single to left to load the bases.  Danielle Ventrone lifted a sacrifice fly to give Fisher a 3-0 lead while Emma Savas ripped a two-out, two-run single to make it a 5-0 game before the Panthers retired the side.

The Cardinals added two more runs in the top of the fourth after Savas led off the frame with a triple and came around to score when Kristina Balsano replaced her with an RBI-triple of her own.

Balsano didn't remain at third long as Julia Sortisio collected an RBI-single to give Fisher a 7-0 lead heading into the home half of the inning.

After giving up a run in the bottom of the fourth, Fisher scored three more runs in the top of the fifth with Savas, Sortisio and Katie Mazierski each driving in a run in the process.

FISHER 17, PITT-BRADFORD 3

The Cardinals, who last scored 17 runs in a game on March 6, 2015 in a 17-9 win over Northland College, fell behind, 2-1, after an inning of play.  Fisher recovered, however, and plated four in the top of the second with Balsano, Sortisio and Prince each collecting an RBI in the frame.

Pitt-Bradford got one back in the home half of the second with a solo blast to make it 5-3, but the Cardinals' lead grew to six runs over the next two innings after Neale laced an RBI-double in the fifth followed by a two-run triple from Prince and an RBI-single up the middle by Sarah Kubik.

The majority of the damage came in the top of the seventh as Fisher scored eight runs on seven hits and two errors to open up a 17-3 lead.  In all, Five different players drove in a run with Neale and Megan Keib picking up two RBI overall.

Monica Moses remained unbeaten in the circle and moved to 4-0 as the sophomore threw 7.0 innings and allowed six hits and three runs (one earned).  Moses struck out four in the win.

The Cardinals open the home portion of their season at 3 p.m. on Wednesday when they host Clarkson University in a non-conference doubleheader at the Softball Complex.
