HOBOKEN, N.J. – The St. John Fisher College women's basketball team fell to Stevens Institute of Technology, 75-41, on Friday in an Empire 8 tilt inside Canavan Arena. Fisher, which despite the loss, clinched a spot in the Empire 8 Championship after Nazareth lost to Hartwick. The Cardinals moved to 12-12 with the loss and 9-6 in the Empire 8 standings while Stevens improved to 14-9, 13-2, respectively.
The Cardinals close out their regular season at 3 p.m. on Saturday when they face Hartwick College in Oneonta.
Fisher held the lead for much of the opening period after
Maria Kelleher knocked down back-to-back 3-pointers to stake the Cardinals to an 11-6 lead midway through the first. Stevens scored five quick points to tie the contest, but
Erin Hulbert pushed Fisher back ahead with a basket inside to make it 13-11 with 2:22 still to go.
The field goal would be Fisher's last for over nearly five minutes while the Ducks went on an 18-0 run to take a 29-13 lead.
Chelsea Repard halted the run with a 3-pointer, but the basket did little to slow Stevens as the home team scored nine unanswered points to open up a 22-point edge, 38-16.
After holding a 44-26 lead at the half, Stevens continued to apply the pressure in the third quarter to the tune of a 13-0 run to put Fisher in a 35-point hole, 65-30.
In the fourth quarter, the damage had already been done as the Cardinals were unable to match Stevens' pace in the 75-41 loss.
Kelleher led Fisher with 12 points as the senior knocked down four from downtown.
Emily Piacentini finished with five points, three rebounds and two assists while Hulbert,
Liga Kalnina and
Meghan Lescinskas each scored four points.
