PITTSFORD, N.Y. – The St. John Fisher College men's soccer team fell 1-0 in a thrilling, overtime Empire 8 showdown with the Nazareth College Golden Flyers. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 7-4-3 on the year, while dropping to 2-3 in Empire 8 play. Nazareth advances to 9-4-1, while jumping to 4-1 in conference play.
The first half of the Battle of East Avenue was virtually even between the Cardinals and the Golden Flyers. Going into the half, Nazareth held the 5-4 shot advantage over Fisher. Jeff Meyers and Justen Polk both fired two shots apiece.
Fisher's best scoring opportunity occurred when Polk dribbled his way around the Nazareth defense, eventually teeing up a shot from the six yard box, sailing wide of the net.
Joe Catalfamo came up big for the Cardinals, preserving the halftime shutout, stopping three shots in the half.
The second half was all Fisher, with the team outshooting the Golden Flyers, 10-4. Fisher had various scoring opportunities, with its best coming with less than five minutes remaining in regulation. Zachary Munski was taken down in the box by a Nazareth defender, setting up the penalty kick attempt for Justin Ferron. The Golden Flyers goalkeeper was able to dive to his left to stop the kick, keeping the game knotted at zero, sending the game into overtime.
Fisher would be undone just about seven and a half minute into the first overtime period, when a Nazareth player slipped through the Cardinal's defense and ripped a shot from ten yards out into the lower right corner of the goal, just out of Catalfamo's reach.
The Cardinals would finish with the 15-11 shooting edge over the Golden Flyers. Meyers would end the game with four of those shots, while Polk and Joe Balls each registered three shot attempts.
Catalfamo would suffer the loss in net, tallying four saves in over 97 minutes of play.
Fisher takes the week off, returning to play at 3 p.m. on Saturday in an important Empire 8 showdown against the Soaring Eagles of Elmira College.
